Bloemfontein – Springbok centre Jean de Villiers is looking forward to taking on his Munster team-mates in the colours of the Barbarians next year.
De Villiers has been invited to represent the Barbarians against Ireland in Limerick on June 4 next year.
The clash at Thomond Park will be played before Ireland embark on their tour of the Southern Hemisphere.
De Villiers (centre), All Black Doug Howlett (wing) and Paul Warwick (flyhalf/fullback) of Munster are the first players that have been invited to take on Ireland.
They are likely to square up against Munster team-mates Paul O’Connell (lock) and Jerry Flannery (hooker) as well.
De Villiers believes is it is a big honour to play for the Barbarians, but a clash with his Munster team-mates will make it even more special.
“You don’t often get the opportunity of playing against the Barbarians. I recently had the opportunity of playing against some of the Munster guys for the Springboks,” he said.
“One could see in last Saturday’s game between the Barbarians and New Zealand how Joe Rokocoko (wing) enjoyed playing against the All Blacks.”
While it is not yet cut and dried that he will play, De Villiers will not turn down the opportunity. It would be his second appearance for the Barbarians.
He says he is enjoying every moment at Munster and that he is playing with an incredible bunch of players.
Cheetahs loosehead prop Wian du Preez also recently joined De Villiers at Munster. Du Preez, who started last weekend’s game against the Ospreys, will return to the Cheetahs prior to the start of the Super 14.
De Villiers is enjoying having another South African at Munster.
“We joke that Munster are the Saracens of Ireland because Wian and I are here.
Not many South Africans have previously played here,” he said.
