Griquas’ unbeaten run continues

Windhoek - Griquas continued their unbeaten run as they thumped the Welwitschias 55-25 (half-time 38-13) in their Currie Cup qualifier at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek on Saturday.

The log-leading Griquas made it six wins from six matches as they ran in eight tries to four to condemn the outgunned Welwitschias to their sixth consecutive loss.

The Welwitschias are rooted to the bottom of the log and have yet to register a single log point.

Scrumhalf Tiaan Dorfling and right wing AJ Coertzen both scored two tries apiece for the Griquas while fullback Gouws Prinsloo ended with 15 points courtesy of six conversions and a penalty.

The Griquas showed early intent as they raced to a 14-0 lead in the eighth minute courtesy of tries from Dorfling and skipper Coertzen before the Welwitschias registered their first points thanks to a penalty from flyhalf Heinrich Smit.

Gouws responded with a penalty of his own before the Griquas went on a scoring spree as they scored 14 points in eight minutes thanks to converted tries from flyhalf Andre Swarts and Dorfling.

The Welwitschias showed that they still had some fight in them and left wing Phillip Nashikaku dotted down for an unconverted try in the 29th minute.

The Griquas struck back with a try from outside centre JW Jonker but the Welwitschias had the last say in the half when inside centre Francois Wiese went over for an unconverted score on the stroke of halftime.

The visitors continued their good form in the second half as they extended their lead to 45-13 thanks to a converted try from tighthead prop Stephan Kotze.

The hosts continued to fight though and replacement centre Justin Nel scored and converted a try in the 60th minute.

But the Griquas were not to be denied and they ran in two more tries through replacement flank Thabo Mabusa and Coertzen before the Welwitschias grabbed a late consolation try from replacement scrumhalf Jean-Claude Winkler.
