Griquas stay in Currie Cup top flight

Cape Town - Griquas retained their Currie Cup Premier Division status after beating the Griffons in a promotion-relegation match in Kimberley on Friday night.

Wing Ederies Arendse scored a hat-trick as Griquas claimed a comprehensive 59-26 (half-time 26-14) win.

The result assured Griquas of top flight status in 2018, while the Griffons will remain in the First Division.

The men from Welkom have won the First Division two years running, but their heavy thumping on Friday night proved the gulf in class between the two divisions.

Griquas coach Peter Engledow said his team "did not play particularly well" despite the handsome winning margin.

"Set pieces are a massive concern for us," he was quoted as saying by AFP, referring to a number of scrums in which his forwards were forced to back-pedal.
