Blue Bulls smash Welwitschias

Pretoria - Jade Stighling ran in four tries as the Blue Bulls hammered Namibia's Welwitschias 95-12 (half-time 38-5) in the Currie Cup Qualifiers at Loftus Versfeld on Friday.

According to SuperSport, Left wing Stighling scored four of the Blue Bulls’ 15 tries with flyhalf Tony Jantjies ending with 19 points after scoring a try and kicking seven conversions as the hosts handed the Welwitschias their 13th loss from 13 matches this season.

Flank Abongile Nonkontwana and right wing Alcino Izaacs both grabbed a brace of tries as the Blue Bulls ran rampant against their outgunned opponents.

It did not take long for the Blue Bulls to open their account and they needed just five minutes to register their first points when Stighling crashed over for a converted try before Izaacs grabbed his first try of the match, in the eighth minute.

The floodgates had opened already and scrumhalf Andre Warner nipped over for a try in the 13th minute as the hosts opened up a 21-point lead.

Stighling nabbed his second try, in the 19th minute, when he went over in the corner before flank Tapiwa Tsomondo crashed over for another try just two minutes later.

Fullback Divan Rossouw then outstripped the defence as he scored a converted try in the 30th minute.

Despite the pounding that they were receiving the Welwitschias had the final say in the first half when eighthman Johann Wohler went over for an unconverted try in the last minute of the half as the Blue Bulls reached the break holding a commanding 38-5 lead.

It took the hosts eight minutes after the restart to add to their lead with No 8 Freddy Ngoza sliding over for an unconverted try.

Stighling completed his hat-trick in the 50th minute before grabbing his fourth try just three minutes later as the Blue Bulls pushed their lead to 57-5.

Jantjies then scored and converted his own try before Nonkontwana stepped his way past three defenders on his way to the tryline.

Replacement loose forward Jsuanre Swanepoel, Izaacs and outside centre Marquit September all scored tries to take the Blue Bulls past the 90-point mark.

The visitors could only grab one consolation try in the second half with fullback Riaan van Zyl dotting down in the 76th minute after a jinking run.
