WP's discipline must improve

Cape Town - Western Province's backline coach Robbie Fleck has called for his players to improve their discipline ahead of their Currie Cup clash against the Sharks at Newlands on Friday night.

Province squandered a 13-0 advantage against the Free State Cheetahs last week to eventually lose 28-22 - largely due to ill discipline.

Fleck says he was actually impressed with their performance in Bloemfontein, but that they let themselves down by conceding silly penalties.

As such, the former Bok centre has called on his players to improve their error-count ahead of their clash with the Durbanites.

"They (the WP players) will need to improve and play for a full 80 minutes going forward. The guys are playing an exciting brand of rugby, but they need to continue to do it on a regular basis," said Fleck on the WP Rugby website.

The Sharks have bolstered their backline with several Springboks after their unexpected loss against Griquas.

Charl McLeod returns at scrumhalf with Patrick Lambie slotting in at inside centre, while the Bok wing duo of Odwa Ndungane and Lwazi Mvovo completes a formidable backline.

However, despite the daunting task, Fleck says his young charges are looking forward to the challenge.

“The guys are really looking forward to getting out there. It is an opportunity to play against some of the best players around so we are all very keen for Friday. We are looking forward to it," said Fleck.

He also hinted that his backline won't change in their approach now that they face arguably their toughest challenge yet in the competition.

“Our focus this week has just been to stick to the plan. For the first 30 minutes of the Cheetahs game we were able to do so and we dominated them. If we stick to our structures then we are confident things will go well.”
