WP sigh relief over Fourie

Cape Town - Vodacom Western Province hooker Deon Fourie was on Monday found not guilty of foul play at a SARU judicial hearing held in Cape Town.

The Western Province hooker was cited under Law 10.4 (M) - for an act contrary to good sportsmanship.

Fourie hooker was cited after his right hand allegedly made contact with the face area of The Sharks hooker Bismarck du Plessis.

The incident occurred during the 61st minute of the game. Western Province defeated The Sharks 33-21.

SARU judicial officer Rob Stelzner considered evidence from Fourie, video recordings and heard submissions from Fourie’s representative.

He noted that Du Plessis’ nose was visible and above the hand of Fourie according to the available footage of the incident.

Stelzner added that Du Plessis did not complain of any eye gouging or eye contact immediately after the incident.

He also pointed out that the incident occurred in front of the assistant referee Marc van Zyl who did not observe any contact with Du Plessis’ eyes.

As a result, the citing was not upheld.
