WP secure final spot

2010-10-16 18:58

Cape Town - Western Province reached the Currie Cup final for the first time since 2001 following their awe-inspiring 31-7 win over the Free State Cheetahs in their Absa Currie Cup semi-final at a jam-packed Newlands Rugby Stadium on Saturday evening.

They will not, however, be returning to their Newlands fortress for their 2010 championship bid because the Sharks, who defeated the Blue Bulls 16-12 in the other semi-final earlier in the day, will host the final in Durban in a fortnight's time.

Province last played a Currie Cup final in Durban in 2000 when they defeated the Sharks 25-15.

At the outset, fortune seemed to favour the visiting Cheetahs as they enjoyed an early turn-over and, uncharacteristically, Province flyhalf Willem de Waal missed an achievable penalty kick in the fourth minute.

Three minutes later, however, the Cheetahs' usually reliable flyhalf, Louis Strydom, also fluffed a penalty.

After 10 minutes of play, neither side managed to grab the initiative, although both teams put together some promising moves which were mostly stifled by handling errors, and the defence at both ends eventually held out for 20 minutes.

But after Free State conceded a 21st minute turn-over, their defence was caught napping down the left flank and winger Bryan Habana darted some 45 metres to dot down the opening try of the match. After De Waal's conversion, Province opened up a 7-0 lead.

The advance seemed to provide Province with a lift and soon they were again hammering at the Cheetahs' defence, but their effort was cut short by a dropped pass eight metres from an unprotected tryline.

The Cheetahs managed to shake off the home side's grip on the match but the Province defence shut them down on two occasions about a metre from the tryline.

In the final five minutes of first-half play, De Waal was on target with two penalties to give Province a commanding 13-0 lead at the break, much to the delight of the majority of the 47 876 spectators.

When Province returned in the second half, they showed a far greater sense of urgency and 16 minutes later they had run up a 24-0 lead.

First De Waal added another two penalties and then flanker Francois Louw rounded off superbly at the corner flag after Province spun the ball wide from a set-scrum 40m out.

Free State's hearts were finally broken when the hosts' enterprising play took its toll in the 67th minute and winger Gio Aplon dotted down after latching on to a pass from substitute scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenage. De Waal's conversion made it 31-0.

The Cheetahs scored a consolation try at the death through wing Philip Snyman and substitute flyhalf Sias Ebersohn added the conversion as the visitors finally opened their scoring account.

Vodacom Western Province - Tries: G Aplon, B Habana, L Louw. Conversions: W de Waal x 2. Penalties: W de Waal x 4.

Vodacom Free State Cheetahs - Tries: P Snyman. Conversions: J Ebersohn.

  • Stan Almendro - 2010-10-16 19:09

Well done province. It is just a pity the the BRAIN of HEAVEN (THE Cape) was not in a game to beat the BRAWN of the "NOORDER". What do you call 15 people watching the final Anmswer "The Bulls"

  • Cliff Bradley - 2010-10-16 19:25

Hoe verneder jy n CHEETAH -- Stuur hom NUWELAND toe !!!

  • stompies - 2010-10-16 19:28

@stan - enjoy your (not yet) moment of glory since you are not used to it!

  • ANTON - 2010-10-16 19:30

Weldone province !!!! I am so happy that the Bulls lost and now the supporters will have so many excuses. They are and always will be the worst supporters.

  • Priester - 2010-10-16 19:47

Congratulations to the Stormers with an emphatic win over the Cheetahs, you proved me wrong and I eat humble pie for that! Sharks, your performance today proved that you can win the Ccup and you earned your place in the final with the Stormers. Blou Bul Groete!!

  • Greg - 2010-10-16 19:51

Free State you were supposed to beat WP into oblivion, now the Sharks are just going to have to beat the living day lights out of those WP mountain goats in two weeks time.

  • WP WP WP - 2010-10-16 19:51

Fire Naka and may be, just may be, you will have a change to win the Currie Cup in future. The stupid Naka tried to play mind games during the week, but the stupid d**s did not realise that rugby is played on the fieds, not in the news papers. LOL

  • coen - 2010-10-16 19:57

Sharks and WP will play to find out who is the best in SA. Bulls best in the world. Go BULLE you are the real world champs.

  • DJ - 2010-10-16 20:17

Well done WP. One feels sorry for the Cheetahs who always gives 100%. And now for the Sharks, an over-rated, over-hyped team. The Sharks are an average team with a very good coach. Our general experience of Shark supporters down here in the Cape is that they are exceptionally arrogant. They have nothing good to say of the Cape (and I am not referring to rugby) even though the live of its land. They have a larger mentality and do not participate in the local community even after staying here for years. So, call it childish if you like but I hope WP gives their team a solid hiding next weekend. Proooovince.

  • STORMER/WP - 2010-10-16 20:52

@Coen and Bull Tards...Sorry chaps, it is over...the crumbling Bok/Bull gameplan was buried today. I will not be grieving. Not ONE supposed Bulls SUPERSTAR had a decent game, and that cr@ppy/boring/one dimensional gameplan can be files under: FINISHED. Hopefully P Divvy can see the light as well...sigh. Great win Sharks, and a great win for my team....see you in Durban.

  • Rico - 2010-10-16 20:53

The two teams who deserve it (i.e. top two log positions) has gone through to the final. Can't complain about that!

  • HEHEHEHEHEHE - 2010-10-16 20:57

Habana left the Bulls at the just the right time....hehehehehe, betya he is thanking his lucky stars tonight - bwhaaaaaaaaaaaa. Bjorn Basson must be kicking himself for signing with the hasbeens.

  • Fellow WP/Stormer - 2010-10-16 21:02

I have no idea what you are talking about "DJ". I lived in Ireland & now England, and the worst SA rugby fans over here are the Bulls & Stormers supporters. I am a WP guy myself but these guys are pathetic. Arrogant, full of crap. To make it worse is the non-stop dribble coming out of the mouths of my fellow Cape-tonians about how they come from the best city in the world, the rest of SA is horrible, blah blah blah..... I have often said to some of them to bugger off back home then if it's so great! Most of the Natalians I've met here are really good people. I wish most SA people could be like them, SA (& Europe) would probably be a better place!

  • Bob - 2010-10-16 21:03

The only thing you n*** have going for you are the WP/Stormers chicks!

  • Big Province Supporter - 2010-10-16 21:14

Congrats 2 all teams. Province took their chances without blinking. The Sharks though showed an extremely solid the Wet! Sharks are def favourites but has WP learnt their lessons from the S14 final? Whichever way, Goodluck to both teams & lets make this a Kracker! Coastal!!!

  • Wee Pee Man! - 2010-10-16 21:19

So erg as wat ek hulle nie like nie is hulle loshande die beste span in SA rugby, gelukkig so af daggie gehad.

  • Table mountain - 2010-10-16 21:21

Mooi manne, dankie tog vir 'n finaal, at last!

  • WP jou lekker ding! - 2010-10-16 21:24

I love it, currie cup could come home! But still a long way to go to knock the Bulls of the thrown, if they had Fourie and Gary and Guthro and and and there wouldn't have been a chance!

  • Streeptrui! - 2010-10-16 21:27

  • Andy.Petersen - 2010-10-16 21:37

    province plaid a blinder.what a backline.

  • WP4eva - 2010-10-16 21:39

Oh, dear the usual nonsense is being written...and the supporters who continually dis one another are only exhibiting their immaturity. If you were real rugby supporters you would comment on the RUGBY and not on the merits and demerits of the supporters..who cares??? To return to the rugby, WP did really well today...but let them not underestimate how much the Sharks pulled their game back in one week! They played excellent rugby in very difficult go to Durbs with your best game in your pockets, or you'll come short. I feel that the top two teams have got through and that is a good reflection of the season...and I agree that PdV needs to look long and hard at the Bulls Bokke and their very predictable brand of rugby...both the Sharks and Province have exhibited exciting, creative rugby and the World Cup will demand all that and more. Hope it's a great final in Durbs!!

  • Robz - 2010-10-16 22:17

As I wrote last week: Put the padlocks on the gates of Loftus. No need to open it again this season. Just imagine the pain you feel every time you walk past the display cabinet and you see the round spot in the dust where the Currie Cup used to stand.

  • sheldon - 2010-10-16 22:50

did anyone notice that all three wp teams are in the finals . not bad for a bunch of so called show ponies .and bull's please do'nt shift to the super 14 with you're argument , hey Coenie that's nonsense . If that's you're argument then province deserve to be in the final . Remember the stormers was in the super14 final too.

  • Bobo - 2010-10-16 23:29

@bob Hey, moron, you wanna cry? Want a tissue? We won, your team lost, deal with it, you moffie...

  • Safire - 2010-10-17 02:49

Western Province will meet the Sharks in battle and will, based on today's performance be hard to beat. Coen it is almost 2011 boet!?...get with the times your team used to play well but have lost the race...Live with it, time is a great healer though and i hope you can reconcile your emotions soon. GO Province!!!

  • Caesar @ Coen - 2010-10-17 07:34

Yesterday the Bulle were dethroned from being the best in the world. The mighty Sharks saw to that. In 2 weeks time the Western Province will rule the roost.

  • ModderOtter - 2010-10-17 08:07

Bwahaha! 'n lekker vet toffie vir WYNSAK, JR, Bloubul, Peter en al daai baberballe van Tswane! Julle ou spannetjie was so pateties, tot die Lions sal julle gister 'n go gegee het!! So klim terug in julle karavaan, ons sal julle laat weet wanneer die S15 afskop!!

  • omapu - 2010-10-17 09:02

@WP4eva am a Bulls fan but you hit the nail on the head... the supporters dissing each other is immature in the extreme, they obviously do not even know rugby and live for the "we won" and "you lost" scenario's, nevermind what happened on the field!

  • Torro Azur - 2010-10-17 10:05

In the modern game of rugby the key to success is to get the 'hirelings' to blend with the locals in the team. The reason WP won was because the mercinaries played well and became part of the team. Jantjies - Lions; Habana - Lions, Bulls; DeWaal - Cheetas; Vermeulen - Cheetas; Van Zyl - Oxford, Lions; Fondse - Bulls. Add to the six Burger, De Villiers and Aplon and you have the core of anternational team. Alister Coetzee (should have been current Bok couch) with Fleckie and Matt did the job. Now please overpower the arrogant Sharks!!!

  • WP_rugby - 2010-10-17 10:36

I have to agree with ANTON - the BULLs will come back with a dozen excuses. Last year they hammered on the "number of tries". This year WP?Stomers turn that around (highest), and only thing left was the "no trophy" Next year there will be nothing left....

  • tim - 2010-10-17 11:29

i have no sympathy for the cheetahs. their supporters and coaching staff were bigmouths during the week and they got their backsides handed to them good and proper. a thrashing is their reward. wp jou lekka ding!!!!!

  • JACK - 2010-10-17 12:41

Go sharks.

  • Jacques - 2010-10-17 16:03

  • @Table Mountain - 2010-10-17 17:14

Nice try undercover bull supporter. Hows about the bulls try and win 5 cups in 5 years?

  • Dixon - 2010-10-17 17:58

Thought the refereeeing was of poor standed looked like Free State were playing against 18 men what with forward passes etc etc cheeta;s had no chance

  • Province!!! - 2010-10-17 18:41

JACK, jy moet wakker skrik my maat!

  • sweis - 2010-10-17 22:20

Go WP Go!

  • Chris in Oz - 2010-10-17 23:57

In the beginning, both the Bulls and WP played in blue and white stripes. But every time one of the teams lost, they took away one white stripe.......

  • Bulls supporter - 2010-10-18 08:02

...well done WP..!! .....well done Sharks..!!

  • Bloubul - 2010-10-18 10:36

  • Kalgat Shark - 2010-10-18 10:56

The Referee was definitely on WP's side. Those forward passes were right in front of the match officials but they turned a blind eye. the match officials should be cited.

  • ockert - 2010-10-18 11:14

The Ref. managed in the last two weeks to elevate WP to the the final - but he's not there with the final - Sharks should win, without a problem. The ref. must along with Pro-Legote rank as one of the most, either prejudiced or worst refs. in the country. Maybe Free State would not have won but cheating is out.

  • Richard - 2010-10-18 11:52

As a neutral viewer Mark Lawrence together with Craig Joubert had a shocker and that Joubert is getting the final is a JOKE
