SARU go easy on WP bad-boys

2012-09-18 13:48

Cape Town - Western Province loose forwards, Jebb Sinclair and Tyrone Holmes appeared before a Disciplinary Committee (DC) held at the SA Rugby Union (SARU) offices on Tuesday.

Both appeared having been red carded for ill-discipline in their team's Currie Cup loss to the Sharks in Durban on Saturday.

Judicial Officer Peter Ingwersen ruled that Sinclair was severely provoked in that he was struck five times by his opponent with an open hand before he retaliated.

The offence was classified as a 'low end contravention' which carries a two week suspension as sanction, unless compelling on-field or off-field mitigating features were found.

The DC found such mitigating features existed in this case and the sending off was considered to be sufficient sanction.

Sinclair will therefore be available for WP's Currie Cup clash with Griquas at Newlands on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Holmes was ruled to have been severely provoked but was never subjected to a physical attack as in the case of Sinclair.

Holmes's retaliation meant he was guilty of striking an opponent.

The offence was classified as a two-week sanction ban.

The player was provoked but not to the degree that it warranted his actions and the mitigating circumstances means Holmes was therefore suspended for one week, which rules him out of this weekend's action.

Pathetic... Smaak my Those agter mekaar manne kyk mooi na mekaar daar in Clown Town...

@charlie, a cuddle on newlands grass, and all is forgiven

      lablue.phoenix - 2012-09-18 15:04

No no no, what's shocking is that you guys will have to play Division 1 next year.

      eden.vanderwiel - 2012-09-18 15:15

Shocking!!

Remember they where all wearing Bok jersey when they committed those stupidities....

      anton.vonvielig - 2012-09-18 15:47

      wp jou lekka kroekgat ding!!!

      ReneMuller.XOXO - 2012-09-18 15:49

@vanderwiel, get off your high horse!!! This is nothing to do with Bulls, Sharks or any other province for that matter. Eben Etsebeth got 2 weeks suspended for 'ALMOST' head-butting a guy. Here you have two guys actually punching 2 other players and the one gets off scot free and the other 1 week suspension. Not a fair decision at all. Good luck with your 'logic' - you display none!!

      steyts - 2012-09-18 16:00

      eden.vanderwiel - 2012-09-18 16:16

Rene And how can dean greyling also just get 2 weeks.. remember Eben got suspended by Aus and NZ.. SARU aint responsible for bokke..

      eden.vanderwiel - 2012-09-18 16:25

      deon.meyer.752 - 2012-09-18 21:32

Don't agree Andre Greylings attack was unprovoked and a cheap shot. Sinclar and Deysel were having a go at each other so Deysel did have a chance to defend himself. Holmes was a different story as it was a bit of a cheap shot.

      goyougoodthing - 2012-09-19 06:38

Who played rugby together... the judge and the WP CEO, anyone still surprised at the decision?

  • jaco.groenewald.731 - 2012-09-18 13:52

And that for punching???? Lucky escape!!!!!!!

  • cape.maori - 2012-09-18 13:56

Bakkies Botha, Bees Roux, Joost vd Westhuizen, Eben Etzebeth, Dean Greyling, Sinclair and Holmes!! Enough said!! Their action represent the typical strong man mentality in SA rugby – sterk, maar dom!

      a.j.bosch - 2012-09-18 13:59

      Joost sterk??? bwhahahaha Dom only.

      Melanie Bronkhorst - 2012-09-18 14:01

guess canadians suffer from that mentality too ;)

      deon.meyer.752 - 2012-09-18 21:39

bloujohnny I guess bakkies has never head butted a guy. Also where does Greyling come from again. I don't like what these guys did but I think Greylings elbow was way more severe as it was his full body weight behind it, he is just lucky it didn't connect properly. Well I guess alot of bulls players were missing things on Saturday. LOL

      jaco.groenewald.731 - 2012-09-19 11:46

  • Melanie Bronkhorst - 2012-09-18 13:59

geez thats lucky!! they should each have received at least 2 weeks - no place for punching on a rugby field, if you want to throw some punches set up a boxing match with sonny bill

Don't be hypocritical now, we all know that you're one of those "Jy weet, daai ou wat daar stap, ek gaan moer hom sommer" omies.

  • theo.dupreez - 2012-09-18 14:07

Wait a minute people. look at the facts: Sinclair was pushed and shoved by Jean Deysel the whole match and was heavily provoked. A red for him and a yellow for Deysel was fair. Holmes, however, hit the guy when he was not even looking at him! He should have got 2 to 4 weeks. Not a bad outcome.

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-18 14:18

I agree. To me it's just amazing that the assistant ref never saw the provocation, which included slapping him in the face, but the moment Jebb slugged him, he saw it immediately. Must say, it was one of the most beautiful "retaliations" I've ever seen. Deysel never knew what hit him, one moment he was still bitch-slapping, the next he was flat on his back :-)

      ReneMuller.XOXO - 2012-09-18 14:24

stirrer, the TMO was called in on both occasions - sorry but this kind of behavior, provoked or not, does not belong in Rugby.

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-18 14:29

René, the TMO was called in AFTER the fact, and only after Province literally had to beg the ref to have a look. I agree that punching has no place in rugby, but neither has blatant provocation as what happened here. The blame should lie with the ref and his assistants who had NO control over the game, and it affected both sides. The situation should not have been allowed to escalate to where it had.

      lean.sadie - 2012-09-18 14:32

To hit somebody like Deysel flat on his back is quite an achievement, he is a huge guy. That said, I Agree should not be this kind of thing in Rugby, neither does provocation belong there either. See that way too often. Generally it seems to happen way more than we know about it, and that in itself is stupid. That said, even with clean records against them, both should have gotten at least 4 weeks off, imo. How can a fake head butt be 2 weeks, and a real punch 1 or less? If anything, Eben should have got no time, and these guys 2 weeks +.

      gert.malan.54 - 2012-09-18 14:35

The TMO was wrong to to give the yellow card to Deysel. If you look at the incident in slow motion (Which he didn't do) you would see that Sinclair had his hands around Deysel's neck. Deysel kept shoving at Sinclair's hands but Sinclair wouldn't let go. When he finally let go, it was to land a punch!

      deon.louw.7505 - 2012-09-18 14:42

Provoking someone rarely gets punished, ask Eben and Bakkies. Professional sportsmen should be able to keep their cool.

      ReneMuller.XOXO - 2012-09-18 14:43

Stirrer, lean, I do not expect you guys to agree, quite frankly (and this is my opinion only), the behaviour of WP players have become very borderline - you will see more and more red/yellow's being dished out with the 'new trial TMO rule'. Stormers got away with murder during the S15. Furthermore this behaviour have also affected the supporters, by means of booing and general bad behaviour - not good for sport in general.

      TravieGrif - 2012-09-18 14:49

Theo, I don't agree with you. There was niggle between Deysel and Sinclair, and handbags were thrown, but the 'provocation' that you talk of was not one-sided at all. I think it was really harsh for Deysel to be yellow-carded for his part in the affair, as it looked to me like Sinclair was hanging on to Deysels throat, who was trying to get away. If you think that provocation is an excuse to throw a punch, then you should be watching boxing and not rugby. I think it is pathetic to justify it, and that Sinclair has been let off without any further punishment. It is not a great message.

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-18 14:58

René, any team's "borderline behaviour" depends on the colour of the blinkers you are wearing. Ask a supporter of any team, and the opposition teams will have borderline behaviour in his opinion. Don't worry, you are not alone. You are just normal.

I'm a WP support and I say it should be 2-4 weeks, very weak. We don't need this in our rugby.

      welcome.koli - 2012-09-18 14:39

we all agree, but theirs a point u get fed up,Sharks been playing negative rugby for to long against WP,its time to stand up against these guys of Durban s negative style of rugby.Next time boys play them on their own game.

      david.s.duncan.1 - 2012-09-18 14:47

Give some examples of our negative rugby Welcome

      TravieGrif - 2012-09-18 14:52

Welcome, I think that you are wrong. At what point are you allowed to get fed up and throw a punch? I understand frustration levels can climb, but that is why these professional players have to have self control. As far as this 'negative' rugby that you talking of that the Sharks are playing against your hallowed WP? Be careful that you don't climb into the sour grapes basket. The games that Province and the Sharks have played in recent history have all been really good games to watch, with lots on the line and good rugby being enjoyed. Enjoy it for what it offers, because there is more to sport than winning and losing.

      ReneMuller.XOXO - 2012-09-18 14:55

@welcome, hahaha, just because the Sharks wipe the floor with WP every time they meet, now the Sharks play negative??? hahahaha - why don't you just admit the Sharks are the better team, healing will follow soon!!!

      justin.roper.3705 - 2012-09-18 18:12

Welcome there was no negative play from the sharks, the sharks habe our number this year like we have the bulls number, the only negative from that game was the punches nd that they didn't get 2 weeks or longer bans

      terry.burne - 2012-09-19 05:48

@justin - the only thing negative about Sharks rugby, is what they do to the WP points difference every time the 2 teams meet!

  • sarge.lepoivre - 2012-09-18 14:19

This is absurd. If this was any other union other than WP, they would have been suspended for at least 6 weeks. Clearly the wrong decision going forward.

      lean.sadie - 2012-09-18 14:27

      Thx, Nostradamus

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-18 14:34

Sarge, what disciplinary action did the Sharks take against Deysel? I'm waiting...

      alfred.neuman.988 - 2012-09-18 14:45

Stirrer perhaps you need to look at the game again. The orignial provocation was Deysel being held around the neck in the maul. This led to "handbags" which led up to the punch. You will see that the "slap" is from Deysel trying to push Sinclair away and the hand slipping up onto the face.

      TravieGrif - 2012-09-18 14:54

Ummmm...sorry Stirrer. I didn't see the punch that Deysel threw, so have been unable to take any action. Oh wait...he didn't throw a punch. That would have been Sinclair. Why are you trying to justify his thuggery?

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-18 15:07

Deysel was constantly bitch-slapping Sinclair. It was clear for all to see during the replays, and that's why he got the yellow card. You probably didn't see it because you looked away - you could not face the prospect of again seeing Deysel going down like a bean-pole, from a punch by a much smaller man. So, you are saying slapping is OK, but not punching? On what grounds are you justifying it?

  • Francois - 2012-09-18 14:30

disgraceful!!! Four weeks minimum!!! One could argue that some punishment were given with the red cards, but punching should be rooted out. It's time we adopt the European way of punishment and give proper punishment(2 months +).

      blou.johnny - 2012-09-18 14:57

Agree..! .why not 4 weeks...? ? ...its a disgrace...!!

The boys did good... Tyrone did deserve it... lol that was an outright punch, for Jebb its not the same... it was a tussle and unfortunately he landed the blow. i still think the linesman was a bit harsh and the ref as well at that point in the game. they will never make it... how many fists flew in super rugby? and how many Red Cards were delt? its a 100:2 Ratio. CC refs are sissies... How many of you have played Rugby? people get hurt and punched and bit and just about any damage you can do. its a free for all. its the nature of the game... only thing is the boys go for a beer after the game and laugh off how stupid they were.

      chris.groenewald.56 - 2012-09-18 16:51

Randy, 100% on the button. It is war for 80 minutes and then you enjoy a beer together? Sort things out on the field!

      sportmal.legrangemarais - 2012-09-18 17:16

@Randy. I've been playing rugby for many years, from schoolboy to club rugby, club rugby especially is tough and there's always a niggle or two, but I play the game, not the man. It's actually not that hard at all to play a clean game, in my whole life I have never thrown 1 punch, bit someone, gauged at another player's eye's or head butted another player on the the rugby field. When you play to enjoy the beautiful game for what it is, it's quite easy to laugh of an attempt of another player to provoke you. Play the ball not the man... That should be our new slogan for clean play (hopefully the Boks could learn to also play the play the ball rather than kick it)

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-18 17:03

Ag nee a, Dr Death, hoe dan nou?

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-18 17:18

stirrer BWA HA HA En daar se jy nou bye-bye vir almal, verduidelik tog asseblief ook vir die mense dat jy nie basiese internet by die huis kan bekostig nie so ons sal eers weer more van jou hoor. Bye bye oubaas se honne, hoop jy't darem SABC 1,2 en 3 by die huis

  • dowwe.duane - 2012-09-18 15:38

Seriously?? What a joke, I guess Province has more than just a few refs on their panel. Anyway, they won't win the CC regardless, and gives me endless pleasure. ENDLESS

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-18 15:53

Province still has a very good chance to win the CC, unlike... unlike... unlike... the Bulls!!!

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-18 16:01

@stirrer Like they would have won the Super-15 because they were first on the log right? Remember all your "wise" words throughout the competition? And then you couldn't cry on here straight after the game cuz you don't have internet at home.

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-18 19:38

@daan In what postion will WP be if they go down to the kwaste this weekend and the Cheetahs win their game? (onthou, net die antwoordjie, geen opstelletjies)

  • eden.vanderwiel - 2012-09-18 15:42

Here's more bull supporters commeting on the wp news as on the the bulls own news? Maybe wp supporters in disguise?

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-18 15:54

Don't blame them. The Bulls stopped making news a few weeks ago.

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-18 16:03

@stirrer Better get all your chirps in, soon you done work and then you go home where there's no internet. Shamepies

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-18 16:11

Ooohhh, eina, sorry Dr Death, didn't realize I hit a nerve there...

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-18 16:27

@stirrer bwa ha ha U did?

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-18 16:56

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-18 22:57

@stirrer So jy kannie eers die R249 Vodacom internet bekostig nie?

  • anton.vonvielig - 2012-09-18 15:50

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-18 16:03

Soon to be 12yr

      anton.vonvielig - 2012-09-18 16:12

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-18 16:50

Nog nie alles nie. Dr Death is nog daar.

      1amAlan - 2012-09-18 17:40

Cool. Then he'll get the 4-6 match suspension you're all calling for.

  • eden.vanderwiel - 2012-09-18 16:18

And yes your right he almost did it.. look again he just made Nathan "Skrik". I know Eben personaly. He may play though but he is not a Vuilgat

      anton.vonvielig - 2012-09-18 16:26

nonsens, hy is n' kaapse vuilgat

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-18 17:10

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-18 16:28

      @john Is jy gestrem?

  • eugene.vandermerwe - 2012-09-18 16:42

As a W.P. supporter, I don't really care that all of you are unhappy with the outcome. I am glad to have them come off so easy!! Is it unfair? Maybe. . . . . Would you guys have been happy as well if it was one of your teams players? DEFINITELY!!! Some times you just get lucky, glad it was my teams players in this instance. W.P. groete uit Pretoria

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-19 02:38

@eugene En jy's so skeef soos 'n sewe rand noot

  • andre.terblanche.5 - 2012-09-18 16:47

Onthou kwota afrigters word anders behandel. Hulle moet eers alles verstaan (11jaar).

  • stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-18 16:55

This is a serious question. Why are Bulls supporters so stupid? I am honestly wanting to know. These comments by supporters here are borderline retarded

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-18 16:59

... and then you must realize these comments are from the very few that are semi-literate and can use a keyboard. You should hear the rest...

      andre.terblanche.5 - 2012-09-18 17:01

Volgens die reels is 'n rooi kaart tenminste 1 week skorsing. Dit geld natuurlik vir die normale afrigters.

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-18 17:21

@stirrer At least the Bulls supporters on here can afford basic internet at home

  • ashraf.g.arendse - 2012-09-18 17:16

Please if you think this is easy look at DEAN GREYLING!

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-18 19:02

  • freiners1 - 2012-09-18 17:43

WP=JOKERS OF WORLD RUGBY

  • moederstad.wp - 2012-09-18 19:25

      stephen.axtell.7 - 2012-09-18 20:03

      Stupid retarded Bull supporter

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-18 22:15

      dowwe.duane - 2012-09-18 22:24

  • goyougoodthing - 2012-09-19 06:36
