WP field weakened team

Cape Town - Centre Tim Whitehead, a late withdrawal against the Cheetahs last week, has been named in the beleaguered Western Province side to face the ever-improving Golden Lions in a Currie Cup match in Johannesburg on Friday night.

Kick-off is at 19:10

Whitehead's hamstring has healed although he only trained for part of the day on Tuesday but Province coach Allister Coetzee said he showed no signs of injury.

Star flank Pieter Louw is still nursing a rib injury and finds himself on the sidelines for at least another week. Injuries together with Springboks call-ups have depleted Province's playing reserves but Coetzee feels his replacements are equal to the task.

"There is no doubt that the injuries have proved disruptive and has become a worry," said Coetzee. "But we back the youngsters here at Province and we are surviving. We want to create the depth at Province."

Prop Wicus Blaauw has picked up niggling injuries this season has been rested but has been given a slot on the substitutes' bench. He is replaced by JD Moller.

Coetzee has opted for five instead of four forwards on his bench in anticipation of a fierce onslaught upfront on the Highveld on Friday night.

Hooker Tiaan Liebenberg has been ruled out through injury and has been replaced by Deon Fourie.

Gio Aplon has been called up to the Springboks squad to face the Wallabies in Bloemfontein and as a result his place on the right wing is taken by JJ Engelbrecht.

On the bench, Callie Visagie comes in as replacement hooker, while UCT's Marcel Brache replaces Lionel Cronje who reverts to the WP Under-21 team to get some much-needed game time.
