WP face 'massive challenge’

Cape Town - Western Province coach Allister Coetzee admits they face a huge challenge when they take on Griquas in Kimberley on Saturday.

Province have been hampered with key injuries of late and the coach says their depth will be thoroughly tested in the coming weeks.

Loose forwards Pieter Louw (4 weeks - rib), Siya Kolisi (1 week- hamstring) and Duane Vermeulen (3 weeks - knee) are all still out through injury, while centre Tim Whitehead is also expected to be out for a month after he injured his knee ligaments against the Pumas last week.

“It is going to be tough against Griquas. They will be confident after a good display last week, " Coetzee told the WP Rugby website.

Griquas overturned a 9-20 deficit with 10 minutes to go to eventually beat the Free State Cheetahs 23-20 last weekend.

Two long range individual efforts swung the game in Griquas' favour, and Coetzee knows full well how important it will be for his charges to keep ball in hand.

“We know we will have to respect the ball this week. They are excellent at counter-attacking and have a lot of players who can punish you.

"It will be vital to be accurate, to play the game in the correct areas and to capitalise when we are in those areas. Griquas also have a good kicker and a solid pack, so it is a huge challenge for us on Saturday," said Coetzee.
