WP face massive challenge

2011-08-01 19:30

Cape Town - The resurgent Western Province team will have a mammoth task on their hands following Monday afternoon's announcement that the Free State Cheetahs may use the services of four returning Springboks in Saturday's Currie Cup match in Bloemfontein.

The South African Rugby Union (SARU) have released Springboks Heinrich Brüssow, Ashley Johnson, Coenie Oosthuizen and Adriaan Strauss for Currie Cup duty and their presence will offer the Cheetahs a massive boost.

No WP players were released by SARU.

"It will be a great challenge for the Province team to play against the Boks, and they will enjoy playing against the best," said Province coach Allister Coetzee, at a press conference in Bellville on Monday.

"With these players available the Cheetahs' team have a Super Rugby look about them.

"These players will bring a lot of confidence into the Cheetahs' ranks and that will make it helluva tough for us.

"We (Province) see it as one exciting challenge for the team.

"Already the Cheetahs are a wonderful contesting team, with a great attacking mindset. If they find it (counter-attack) is on, they'll have a go.

"They are also competitive at the breakdown and they are particularly dangerous when playing off turn-over ball."

Province turned in a highly-credible performance in their 35-7 win over the Bulls at Newlands last weekend but Coetzee said there are many playing aspects that the team still need to address this week.

"We showed improvement at the restarts and the set-pieces, which was pleasing," said Coetzee.

"But we didn't capitalise on a number of occasions and at times our turn-over ball was turned over because we failed to protect the ball adequately.

"We dominated the collisions but it would help greatly if we manage to keep ball in hand longer."

Coetzee said the team was unlikely to change for the Cheetahs clash because he was trying to help the combinations gain momentum.

"Very few changes will help to pick up momentum and I want the players to grow as a unit," said Coetzee.

"We also want to make sure that we continue to improve with the lessons we learn from every outing as a team."

It is likely that the highly-rated loose forward Pieter Louw could be returning to action on Saturday, albeit from the substitutes' bench, after a long injury lay-off.

"It will be a great challenge for the Province team to play against the Boks, and they will enjoy playing against the best," said Province coach Allister Coetzee Sad, very sad. 4 players turns the cheetahs into a bok team????? ....against the best.... lekker voor op die wa

      Ian - 2011-08-01 20:27

Don't mis-read on purpose. He quite clearly means the 4 Bok players returning and, by definition, Bok players are the best in their positions.

      Creeky - 2011-08-01 21:27

Bet ya Alistar will be GOOLE-ING for PLAYERS OF DIFFERENT SKIN COLOUR IN GOOLE-LETU.... The BIG HAIRLESS CEO of WEEPEE told him too... doubt he will be finding to many BLACK Springboks in GOOLE-LETU......

      Creeky - 2011-08-01 21:28

Ian...except for Johnson, Oosthuizen and Straus.... there is only ONE REAL BOK... Brussouw!

      Mike@CapeT - 2011-08-02 00:08

@creeky, I guess you mean GOOGLE!

      JohnnyBB - 2011-08-02 07:54

      ....Go Cheetahs...!!! .......Go Cheetahs..!!!

      lenand40 - 2011-08-02 08:20

He meant Guguletu (GooGooletu), not Guleletu (Gooleletu)

      Jay - 2011-08-02 08:27

Wow Creeky you are special aren't you?

      BiggestBull - 2011-08-02 08:53

Creeky, you are a creepy guy.

  • Carl Muller - 2011-08-01 20:27

All the best....may the best team wins.....

  • SAFFA-CAT - 2011-08-01 20:36

The fact that you are saying the team is unlikely to change for the Cheetahs game Sir Coetzee, means that you told Thelo Wakefield to get lost with his demands and gripes for now. I have always admired and respected you greatly Sir Coetzee, but by saying team changes are "unlikely" (even with the Wakefield pressure) just makes me admire you more. In Alistair I certainly trust.

      Mike@CapeT - 2011-08-02 00:09

      @SAFFA...hear, hear!

      Kleinboet - 2011-08-02 01:52

Thank you, SAFFAS-CAT, for saying what I wanted to say - just better!

      JohnnyBB - 2011-08-02 07:56

...Alister Coetzee = palooooooka ... ......still NO cups.....

      Chillipop - 2011-08-02 08:06

@ Saffa-Cat - well said! I am so glad that one person has the balls to stand up to the pressure being put on him...the fact that Thelo Wakefield even made those demands is silly...stick to your guns Allister - you have everyones' admiration and support! Choose the best guys for the job at hand...its not an election that you are trying to win, but rather a domestic competition!!!!

      John - 2011-08-02 08:21

Wakefield claims he was misquoted. Coetzee also stated he picks his teams on merit and has always done so. He also said, as at 6:00PM yesterday, he was not aware of any meeting with Wakefield. So it all seems like a bit of a Storm in a teacup. Maybe just another piece of really bad journalism.

      jk - 2011-08-02 08:22

saffa- you and me can say what we want, fact is wakefield doesnt read this, and couldnt care less, so your comments is like farting in the wind...

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-08-02 08:33

@jk - Make no difference I know...but I at least feel better having whinged.

      jk - 2011-08-02 08:39

saffa- its too depressing- sat against the fs, now thats exciting... 35-7 again?? or are we gonna go for the 40??

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-08-02 08:53

@jk - in Bloem, against the Cheetahs (who are pissed off with their losses and with 4 Bok players back) I will be happy with a 1 :)

      jk - 2011-08-02 09:04

saffa- if you rad my other comments here, i said those afrikaner seuns in bloem are fuming.. its gonna be hell... but we must believe saffa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From a Province Supporter, it's great to see the name Brussow in the mix again...... Should be our first real test of the Currie Cup, although we made hard work of Griquas.

      MrG - 2011-08-02 07:18

I agree. Would like to see if the young players will again perform as good as the last week or three. Looking forward to the week-end.

  • jacques.nortier1 - 2011-08-02 07:20

Don't know why everyone get's so worked up on CC, all it a Vodacom Cup on powerade. I do not wast my time watching this circus. They can take this thing that they call a CC and give a Plastic Cup for the winner for that is what it deserve. As a full blooded WP supporter the win against the bulls was a nothing. 13 of the Bulls players did not play on saturday against the the six of WP. Even if you take the Bulls who are leaving at the end of the year out there was still 9 players for the Bulls missing. The Safa clowns are making the oldest and best tournament cheap. NExt year will be the same where second teams will run out for the CC. Rather kick ball with my son on saturdays after we went fishing that watch this circus.

      David - 2011-08-02 07:42

So what now? Do we pull out of all international rugby so you can always have the best players playing the CC?

      MrG - 2011-08-02 07:45

No David, he is one of those who also wanted to play but couldn't. - 2011-08-02 07:57

Bulls were Kuk with those 13 players in the Super 15 , dont put them on a Pedalstal Jacques. And those Four players just happen to be the Gel that holds the Bulls together.

      jk - 2011-08-02 08:28

jacques,nortier- gaan kyk jy danmaar netbal of hoe jou laaitie sukkel om n bal te vang. CC is in ons bloed, dit is waarmee ons groot geword het, so, respekteer di of cheers!!!!

You're an idiot Jacques, I am enjoying watching these youngsters come through and if anything, it does prove that there is a place for the Curry Cup....even in an expanded Super 15 and WC year.

  • saburger - 2011-08-02 07:59

The teams doing the best in Currie Cup, should be scrutinized for better Bok players! Many positions are not filled by on form players. All four FS players allowed for play, should be part of the Bok team! The coaching staff messed up!

      MrG - 2011-08-02 08:08

I take it you also watch rugby from time to time.
