WP eager to use all 7 Boks

2012-10-08 22:16

Cape Town - Western Province coach Allister Coetzee is eager to include all seven of his returning Springboks for their clash against the Free State Cheetahs at Newlands on Saturday.

They head into the final round-robin clash looking to secure a semi-final spot, and Coetzee is not willing to take any chances, especially as they could yet finish bottom of the log if they lose and other results go against them. That would mean a promotion-relegation match against the EP Kings, which would be a disgrace for a union of WP's magnitude.

"I have to pick the strongest possible team," he told Die Burger. The match is of huge importance. Not one of them indicated any form of tiredness or not wanting to play."

And the coach is confident that all of Jean de Villiers, Tiaan Liebenberg, Eben Etzebeth, Andries Bekker, Duane Vermeulen, Juan de Jongh and Bryan Habana will be available this weekend.

Deon Fourie and Bok skipper De Villiers both sat out training on Monday with hamstring niggles but are expected to be available whilst a question mark still hangs over Gio Aplon who has completed his rehabilitation on his ankle injury.

Coetzee said De Villiers has a "realistic chance" to play. Should that be the case he will also lead the team ahead of Fourie.

"It is normal protocol for the one who was appointed captain for the season to take over if he returns from Bok duty," Coetzee said.

"Deon has led the side very well, considering he had a side with very limited resources."

The clash against the Cheetahs kick off at 17:05 on Saturday.

What do you do for a drowning WP Rugby player? Nothing. You could drag him to the top, but he’ll choke anyway.

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-09 07:25

Chris, 11 years no cups. Just for you.

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-09 07:39

Thank you. And remind me again, why do you need to tell me that? How many years again?

      BlouMasjien1 - 2012-10-09 08:43

      @chris, 11 and counting.

      christiaan.plessis - 2012-10-09 11:30

Honestly dont know how the bulls count. Cupless 11 years?? Need I remind them that WP currently holds the Vodacom Cup and 2 years they have been the best SA team winning the Super 15 Conference Cup, which is worth much more than the current watered down currie cup. Yes congratulations on your 3 Super 15 cups, you can stir them with your 3 wooden spoons in the same comp. If your gonna be so caught up in former glory then need I remind you WP still has the most Currie Cups! Come to think of it, your trophy case is kinda empty at the moment :) So stop worrying about WP and start concentrating on your promotion relegation game against the KINGS!

      ckrohne1 - 2012-10-09 12:48

@christiaan.plessis -: Nice come back.............Go WP jou lekkerige Ding..........

  • hansieenelmien.myburgh - 2012-10-08 22:41

Call me old fashioned, but I would love a WP vs Blue Bull final. Nothing against the other sides. Sharks and Lions deserve it more than WP and Bulls, but I can only hope. All the best to all the sides!!!!

      gavin.simpson.0 - 2012-10-09 08:05

meneer, jy is old fashioned. Go sharks 8)

      deon.louw.7505 - 2012-10-09 10:22

They might both fail to make the play offs, but I agree it would be nice to have a North versus South again.

      jaco.groenewald.731 - 2012-10-09 11:59

Will that be the first time in history that both the bulls and WP fail to make the play offs??? If it happens, please forbid!!!

  • Hanjo - 2012-10-08 22:45

I would love to see Brache starting in the 12 jersey inside Jean or de Jongh. For me Brache has been nothing short of spectacular.

      nico.eksteen.7 - 2012-10-09 05:52

He was poor last weekend, though.

      garry.vanzyl - 2012-10-09 07:01

He was poor the last 2 games...

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-09 07:26

      He's poor. Period.

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-09 07:41

Poor is still better than pathetic, which Meisiekind, Danie Rossouw and Wallaby Hougaard were throughout their careers.

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-09 08:34

Chris, how many cups will he win? Just a number, please.

  • guy.bishop1 - 2012-10-09 06:10

Sorry Kaptein Spies he's right. WP has won the most Currie Cups. Go Sharks!

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-09 06:28

But you have to remember, in dowwe nurse canadian.maori's little mind, the world was created in 1938 and ended in 2009. According to him and his furry pink maatjies nothing happened before or after this period.

      kaptein.spies - 2012-10-09 15:18

@guy I don't disagree that WP has won the most cups. The question/statement was WP is the most successful though, as we all know that is not true.

  • gwvickers - 2012-10-09 07:14

Well, that's the only way they going to win games, or should I say, to play rugby of a change

  • jaco.groenewald.731 - 2012-10-09 07:14

Dis nie hoe daardie games moet wees nie!

      jaco.groenewald.731 - 2012-10-09 07:56

Bootman, NO Bulls supporter. All I am saying, they are coming back for the LAST round robin match, the players that got the team there in the first place, are being pushed aside now??? Yes its lekke to have the likes of MS Flip and the guys back, but still think its unfair!!

  • arnold.coetzee - 2012-10-09 07:43

    panic stages

  • martincandis.vanstaden - 2012-10-09 07:50

Ek weet nie of dit eers gaan help nie, met Coetzee se game plan sal net die manne se individual play en miskien as hul sy game plan onder die gat skop en hul eie game plan opmaak sal hul wen anders geen hoop.

  • john.comyn.18 - 2012-10-09 08:14

That will make for a very strong side. The unions pay the players salaries so they can't take the blame for playing these guys plus these guys want to play.

  • seanread.crisp - 2012-10-09 08:15

Am I the only one around here who thinks these players have had enough game time for the year. Look at Etzebeth, he's 20 and played like 25-30 odd professional games this year, he could burn out if he isnt rested. Give them a rest already!!

      bertie.naude.35 - 2012-10-09 08:17

De Villiers should take a permanent break from from rugby.

  • bertie.naude.35 - 2012-10-09 08:15

I predict WP to be champs next year. First division champs.

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-09 08:35

      They will probably choke.

      jaco.groenewald.731 - 2012-10-09 08:50

No they will probably lose against die Valke in the semies!!!

      kaptein.spies - 2012-10-09 15:19

@bertie No, they will choke in the semis

  • robert.reeve.7564 - 2012-10-09 09:03

Seven returning bokke to WP will need resanitising after being in a bad camp. Delouse them, give them a rest and use them as impact players if we must have them...

  • louis.bensch.31 - 2012-10-09 09:07

    Let the choking begin....

  • tim.kilpin - 2012-10-09 10:20

Will not work as the team has been working without them - start with a few in key positions and play the rest off the bench

  • deon.louw.7505 - 2012-10-09 10:27

Maybe Habanna needs a rest, WP supporters will be upset if he fails another interception and the Cheetahs score.

      jaco.groenewald.731 - 2012-10-09 11:03

      HeHe

  • andre.terblanche.5 - 2012-10-09 10:36

wp behoort die Vrystaat te wen maar dan wag die kwartein weg van die berg......en die choke vat oor. Die bokke bring net meer chokers op die veld......12j
