Cape Town - Western Province coach Allister Coetzee said he felt a great sense of satisfaction after his charges were able to close their match with a 15-12 victory over the Blue Bulls at Newlands on Saturday evening.
The traditional 'North-South' derby was keenly fought throughout and both sets of defence remained in the game as the intensity reached Test match proportions at times.
"I'm very happy with four match points," said Coetzee.
"In the past we often lost these close games, but thankfully it was not the case today and that's why I am so satisfied. This match was as tough as it gets.
"It's even more pleasing that we are still unbeaten at this stage of the competition.
"It was also awesome that Newlands was near capacity for a Currie Cup league fixture."
The match attracted close on 48 000 spectators and in the process set a Newlands record for a Currie Cup match.
Province's victory capped a fine day for the Cape Town-based union, who earlier in the day scored wins over the Blue Bulls in the Under-21 and U-19 divisions.
"It was a good day at the office," said Coetzee. "It's what we are hoping to achieve - success in all divisions."
Bulls coach frans Ludeke said in spite of his side's defeat it had been "a really a good contest", with Western Province flyhalf Willem de Waal and his opposite number, Jacques-Louis Potgieter, scoring all the points in the match from penalty kicks.
"The players were really positive and that's what made it an excellent contest," said Ludeke. "Willem was the more accurate on the day and that made the difference.
"I'm pleased that in these pressure situations our players keep their heads.
"We're also pleased with the fact that we've made great strides, especially as there were quite a few players (in our team) who were in action at Newlands for the first time."
