WP buoyed by returning Boks

2012-10-08 17:41

Cape Town - Western Province could be fielding a team of Super Rugby strength in their Currie Cup match against the Free State Cheetahs on Saturday at Newlands.

Returning Springboks, hooker Tiaan Liebenberg, locks Eben Etzebeth and Andries Bekker, eighthman Duane Vermeulen, wing Bryan Habana, centres Juan de Jongh and Jean de Villiers are all available ahead of the Cheetahs clash.

"It is so good to have a bigger group to select from for a change and we can shift into Stormers [Super Rugby] mode," WP coach Allister Coetzee said on Monday.

"I'm very happy with the energy they bring and one could see the spring in the step of the youngsters at training this morning.

"The Boks are returning at a time after we've suffered a few defeats, and that has knocked the players' confidence."

Coetzee said it would be hard on the group of young players who had made it possible for WP to challenge for a semi-final berth to replace them with the incoming Boks.

"The youngsters have done well to give us a fighting chance of reaching the semis while the Boks were away and they'll have to realise that the Boks will have to take over from here," said Coetzee.

"The youngsters will share the view that the best way to reach the objective of playing the semis will be to use the Boks."

The WP mentor said it would be a challenge to select the right players for their final encounter of the league phase.

"Some of them have been a way for a while and now the challenge to get a balanced gameplan so that they can fit in," he said.

"It is also worth looking at their individual workloads before making a selection call. I must be sure that I send fresh Boks our on to the field."

Coetzee confirmed on Monday that Bok captain De Villiers would lead the side in the remaining games in place of Deon Fourie.

"It is normal protocol for the one who was appointed captain for the season to take over if he returns from Bok duty," Coetzee said.

"Deon has led the side very well, considering he had a side with very limited resources."

The 2012 strength-versus-strength Currie Cup format has proved a major success and Coetzee said none of the teams knew what their final log positions would be ahead of the weekend's final round of league fixtures.

"It is great for the competition that all the six places will only be decided when the final round of matches have been played," he said.

"It is a must-win game for us, and that's also the way it is for the other (five) teams."

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-10-08 21:54

Isak, why are you always so distant on match days? We can't find you anywhere? If you give stick then be prepared to suck it up as well...

      chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-09 03:45

Nurse canadian.moari wil alweer net die antwoordjie he.

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-10-09 11:49

@Isak, thanks for the log - that's my team in 2nd place!!! If memory serves me we beat WP twice in the Currie Cup! I know this because you were MIA for those weekends ... But you go on and say your say, just in case the Cheetahs beat you guys on Saturday cause then you'll be gone again!

      macziekpk - 2012-10-09 18:22

Isak you will beat no one in any semi. If WP make the semi, they will choke.

      sean.brady.14224 - 2012-10-10 00:17

Die WP word ten minste sterker gemaak met Bokke wat actually games in die Rugby Championship gespeel het. Die Bulle word "sterker" gemaak met 'n klomp waterdraers en passengers.

I'll be glad if Jean and Brian can play this weekend. It will greatly improve the Cheetahs' chances of winning.

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-08 18:16

Dis klaar n 14 punt handicap vir die 2 'intercept specialists' se spannetjie.

Coetzee: 'we've suffered a few defeats' and the Springbok players? I take it they haven't had a few defeats!\r\nC: 'bigger group to select from' and the 10 x Super league clubs? Not good enough... Again!\r\nC: 'youngsters, spring in their step' Seriously Coetz... Maybe there is a spring in their step because they don't have to play for you...\r\nOk, ok give credit when due... Credit to choke...

  • sean.brady.14224 - 2012-10-08 21:52

Liebenberg and de Jongh you can understand. Maybe give Vermeulen some game time. But the rest should be given a rest! Especially Eben, Habana and de Villiers. Etzebeth has missed a single game recently through the infamous headbutt. If the Stormers win he could possibly play for the next three weekends. A week or two off then its away to UK for three Tests. Once they get home they have another two or three week break, then starts the hard training for Super 15! Next March / April when he has a team of walking wounded AC will complain about the guys playing too much rugby? Go figure...

  • chrisin.oz.1 - 2012-10-09 00:56

  • rob.bancroft.94 - 2012-10-09 01:45

Yes, judging by the last few results, WP is going to need them if they want to win matches.
