WP bag bonus point

Potchefstroom - Western Province came out firing against the Leopards in Potchefstroom on Friday evening, coming away with a 47-9 win for their first Currie Cup victory of the season.

The Capetonians bounced back from last week's season opening draw to Griquas, while the Leopards suffered their second successive demoralising defeat.

The home team started out well with flyhalf Clayton Durand slotting over a penalty goal three minutes into the match.

The scores were drawn two minutes later when WP flyhalf Demetri Katrakilis converted a penalty, and the Leopards took the lead once again with Durand's second successful attempt at goal.

Province hit back, however, with a five-pointer as wing JJ Engelbrecht darted through for a try after receiving an inside pass from centre Johann Sadie.

Katrakilis converted to give the visitors a four-point lead.

The Leopards added their last points of the match through a third and final Durand penalty midway through the first half.

Katrakilis kept the scoreboard ticking over with accurate place kicking as he scored 22 of his team's points, only missing with two attempts.

It was all one-way traffic for the rest of the match as the visitors attacked the line with fervour.

WP prop Brok Harris broke through then offloaded to hooker Deon Fourie who was brought down shortly before the line.

Harris was rewarded for his supportive play as he picked up the loose ball from the ruck to score a try shortly before half-time, with Katrakilis converting to give them a 14-point lead at the break.

After the interval the Leopards regained some composure as they kept WP scoreless for the opening period of the second half.

The Leopards defended tirelessly but Province's piercing attacks eventually found a gap with 20 minutes left in the game.

Sadie received the ball metres before the line for an easy try, with Katrakilis converting.

WP lock De Kock Steenkamp had only one man to beat just minutes later to score his team's fourth try and bag a bonus point.

The home side attacked valiantly to savour some dignity but their efforts were dashed as Province flanker Nick Koster bashed his way over the line shortly before the end of the match.

Scorers:

Platinum Leopards - Penalties: Clayton Durand (3).

DHL Western Province - Tries: JJ Engelbrecht, Brok Harris, Johan Sadie, De Kock Steenkamp, Nick Koster. Conversions: Demetri Catrakilis (5). Penalties: Catrakilis (4).
