WP also wanted Hernandez

Bloemfontein – Juan Martin Hernandez could start a new chapter in his rugby career in the shadow of Table Mountain on July 11. This versatile Argentine international could play for the Sharks in a Currie Cup match against the Western Province.

After six seasons at Stade Francais, Hernandez now wants to measure himself against the best in South Africa and the southern hemisphere.

"Allegations that he has already been contracted by the Sharks are unfounded and premature although he would specifically prefer to live in Durban or Cape Town."

"He is open to other considerations given his desire to measure himself against the top players in South Africa and the southern hemisphere. Negotiations are continuing," said the well-known sporting agency, Essentially SA.

French websites earlier this week reported that Hernandez had already been contracted to the Sharks for a record amount.

The Sharks have lost significant depth over the past two seasons. The Durban-based side lost Bok flyhalf Butch James to Bath and Frans Steyn is on his way to Racing Metro after the Currie Cup.

Hernandez is just what the Sharks need for the Currie Cup series after their disappointing 2008 and 2009 Super14 campaigns.

Western Province were apparently also interested in his services as the Cape side face uncertainty about Peter Grant's availability. It is expected that Grant could soon join Steyn at Racing Metro.

The agency, however, dispelled suggestions that only a record amount could entice Hernandez to South Africa.

"Hernandez is a very humble individual who doesn't expect to be paid more than his South African counterparts. He has had record offers from two French club teams but would rather play in South Africa."

"He wants to experience Currie Cup and Super14 rugby while he is in the prime of his career," said the sporting agency.

"He is regarded by many French rugby experts as the most valuable player in the French Top14 series. His decision is based largely on lifestyle and rugby experience. Finances have been pushed to the background."

Sport24 could not reach Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl or commercial manager Rudolf Straeuli for comment. Their cellphones were switched off.

Agree with Hein - Currie Cup is our domestic provincial championship. RSA players only - I do not like inter provincial purchases either

still feel that any team contracting OVERSEAS’ players should, as a quota requirement, have an additional 2 DOMESTIC disadvantaged players on the field during matches. We’ve got enough talent in SA – develop them, the overseas players are just depriving local people from earning an income.

Werner...I aggree with you on WP usually playing against the best. I guess my Bulls will see your Sharks in the CC final. At Loftus...

they want to sign him because hes a quality player!one season is enough because his experience will be beneficial to the younger inexperienced guys and when he leaves it means that the younger guys will get a chance!the 'free state pool' hasnt dried up,we just dont need anyone in particular!a winning team makes decisions such as this..unlike free state!this is a professional game, get over it.south african rugby is never going to be the best competition in the world(although it already is in terms of quality of rugby)if we dont attract the top players in the world!here you complaining about buying players but you probably wont even go to a game!this is what sells out stadiums!come on sharks

Pienaar and Steyn won't be available for most of the Currie cup due to springbok commitments. So it's a good move, and his presence will all aid the youngsters in the squad!!

It all depends on what you really want to do, if you want to play AGAINST the best, go to WP, you'll always get a spot on the team and you will play against the best; if you wanna see if you can earn a spot to play WITH the best, go to the Sharks...

Why don't the Lions wake up and start signing some overseas based players to bolster the squad. Is it maybe because we have 1 eyed, narrow minded idiots running the show...

Bring on the Currie Cup!!!! I am so g***** for the B&IL's cry babies that I feel like ............

Why? Why do a union want to sign an overseas player? Has the Freestate Pool dried up ? Is there no other JNR coming throw the ranks? What about Brummer (bulls) or Cronje (freestate) and why is it always Natal and Province needing overseas player? and if they stay only 1 season what help is it? And Pienaar, is he back at Scrumhalf?
