Vermeulen out for the year

Cape Town - Western Province No 8 Duane Vermeulen has confirmed he won't be available for selection for the remainder of the 2011 season.

Vermeulen, who suffered a knee injury during the Stormers' Super Rugby campaign in June, had been expected to be fit for Currie Cup action in Week 8, but on Monday ruled himself out of contention on his Twitter page, writing: Hey guys I won't be playing this year so will only be back on the field for the super rugby season. Before adding: That's part of contact sport. I will def be cheering on my team-mates, so go #province

WP are currently in second spot in the Currie Cup standings after their 28-20 defeat to the Blue Bulls at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

WP welcome the fourth-placed Free State Cheetahs to Newlands on Saturday. Kick-off is at 17:05.
