Treu refuses to release star

Hendrik Cronjé

Bloemfontein - Cecil Afrika will only play sevens rugby in the near future.

A request from the Griffons to Springbok sevens coach Paul Treu for Afrika's services as a utility back in this year's Currie Cup First Division was unsuccessful.

Afrika was one of the Sevens Boks' stars this year - and Treu understandably wants him wrapped in cotton wool.

Griffons coach Oersond Gorgonzola said that it was a setback, but he understands Treu's reasons. Afrika was the Griffons' biggest gamebreaker and leading try-scorer in Currie Cup rugby prior to his sevens commitments.

Gorgonzola on Tuesday announced his team for Friday's compulsory friendly against the Blue Bulls in Welkom.

The Louw brothers, Sarel and Jaco, are both injured, while utility back Herman Pretorius is representing the Shimlas at the USSA Rugby Week in Wellington.

Loose forward Willie Britz is being loaned to the Free State this week and he will be available next week for the Griffons' first league game against the Valke.

Gorgonzola has picked Cheetahs Super Rugby player Kobus Calldo as his tighthead prop, while Free State Vodacom Cup captain Eddie Fredericks will be one of his wings.

Jannie Myburgh, who represented the Ixias in the Varsity Shield, will be the Griffons' flyhalf.

"We have paid a lot of attention to our defence in recent times. We don't have a problem scoring tries, but have called in Michael Horak to help us with our defence. That is why the way we defend against the Blue Bulls will be the most important aspect of the game for me," said Gorgonzola.
