Steyn, 26, also underwent surgery in May this year after he injured his leg playing for the Sharks against the Highlanders in the Super Rugby competition. He was diagnosed with compartment syndrome - a heavy pressure build-up in a limb.
Steyn made his return to action for the Sharks in the Currie Cup semi-finals against Free State two weeks ago and also played in their 33-19 final win over Western Province at Newlands last Saturday.
Steyn was not included in the Springbok squad named on Monday and following the operation, won't be available as a possible injury replacement for the duration of the Springboks' end of year tour to the UK and France, starting next month.
