Spies out of Griquas clash

Pretoria - Vodacom Blue Bulls No 8, Pierre Spies, has been ruled out of Saturday's Absa Currie Cup rugby match against Griquas in Kimberley.

Spies was part of a conditioning programme followed by contracted Springboks and is yet to play in the Currie Cup competition, but is suffering from a calf strain.

Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha, Danie Rossouw, Wynand Olivier and Morne Steyn will all be considered for the match in Kimberley, the first after being allowed back to provincial rugby.

Gurthro Steenkamp (broken arm), Gerrit-Jan van Velze (broken thumb), Juandre Kruger (broken hand) and Deon Stegmann (hamstring) have been ruled out as well.

Gary Botha (knee) is expected to be fit for the last round-robin clash of the competition.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
