Sharks retain top talent

Durban - The Sharks have announced that in the long term, depth in all positions is well-covered as the core of the current team have committed to staying in Durban for the foreseeable future, writes Sharks website editor, Michael Marnewick.

While there have been reports of offers being made to some Sharks players coming out of contract at the end of this season, they have signed extensions to their contracts while a few new faces will grace the environs of the Absa Stadium Durban during preseason training ahead of next year's inaugural 15 team Super Rugby tournament.

While a few contracts are still being finalised, the majority of the current squad, and indeed pretty much the entire team that will represent the Sharks in Saturday's Currie Cup semi-final against the Blue Bulls, have pledged themselves to staying in KwaZulu-Natal.

Keegan Daniel, Ryan Kankowski, Tendai Mtawarira, JP Pietersen and Jacques-Louis Potgieter have all committed to the Sharks for the next three years together with Meyer Bosman, Conrad Hoffman and Charl McLeod, while Patrick Lambie and Lwazi Mvovo have two year contracts.

Some players have extended their contracts while others remain contracted as per their signings in previous years.

Young players include Anton Bresler, Dale Chadwick, Kyle Cooper, Guy and Ross Cronje, Wiehahn Herbst, Jandre Marais and Julian Redlinghuys together with two South African Sevens players who won the bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in India on Tuesday, current Sharks Academy students S'Bura Sithole and Lubabalo Mthembu.

The rest of the squad currently contracted to the Sharks are: Willem Alberts, Jacques Botes, Craig Burden, Jean Deysel, Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis, Alistair Hargreaves, Adrian Jacobs, Louis Ludik, Lionel Mapoe, Gerhard Mostert, Odwa Ndungane, Ross Skeate, John Smit, Steven Sykes, Stefan Terblanche, Eugene van Staden and Luzuko Vulindlu.
