Sharks fail with 'new' Sharky

2011-07-19 15:27

Christo Buchner

Johannesburg - Luckily for the Sharks, their performance against the Bulls in Durban was much more impressive than their new-look mascot.

Sharky - a popular mascot for the Sharks over the last number of years - has undergone a metamorphosis.

After the "new" Sharky was announced with much excitement a few weeks ago, it was disappointing to see a character that much rather resembles a Ninja Turtle or a bullfrog.

The old Sharky was much more athletic than the new version and also looked more like a Shark.

In fact, the new Sharky one is quite a comical character - sure to much rather be made a mockery of than being feared by opponents.

This character with his white pants and slippers will probably look much more at home at a Bowls club.

Like some fan said on Saturday: "If that is how sharks look, no one will be afraid of them."

    useless artickle!!!

      Bulldozer - 2011-07-19 15:47

      Useless spelling!!!

      Gareth - 2011-07-19 15:49

      useless spelling...

      jk - 2011-07-19 15:52

the markets close very soon, im in a hurry, so spelling is last on my list, some of us are not only tea boys dozer/raven...

      Samuel Botha - 2011-07-19 15:52

      Doesn't artickle your fancy hey?

      Frox - 2011-07-19 16:30

      Useless Fish

      PunkBuster - 2011-07-20 12:11

      Huh... Epic FAIL...

  • ChrisG - 2011-07-19 15:37

Surely the person that designed the new mascot was a Bulls supporter? Someone must be trying to take the piss here.

      Gazza69 - 2011-07-20 08:41

      Hahaha......i call that a real "shar(oc)ker"

  • FaultyZN - 2011-07-19 15:37

He looked like a hunchback whale rather than a shark. Even my kids thought it was pathetic. They have taken all the fun out of Sharkie and replaced him with a sorry excuse.

  • Nazgul - 2011-07-19 15:38

The previous one looked like a grey banana...

      Bulldozer - 2011-07-19 15:51

      With teeth.

      jk - 2011-07-19 15:59

      hoor nou vir dozertjie...

      KN - 2011-07-19 16:02

I heard your Ma likes grey banana's...

      Bulldozer - 2011-07-19 16:45

I heard your pa is a grey banana.

  • The_Fox - 2011-07-19 15:38

I must say, it doesn't look very good.

      Gazza69 - 2011-07-20 08:43

      ....add Barney's voice to it.....

  • Andrew - 2011-07-19 15:39

What a sour story. Compared to the Paedo-Crack-Addict-Lion mascot, this is far more approachable for kids. Who said mascots were supposed to be threatening or intimidating anyway? You don't want to give children (might I remind you, the target demographic for mascots) nightmares. It does look more like a Shark, and finally, if the opponents who come to the Shark-Tank pay ANY attention to what the mascot looks like, let alone intimidated by it, they're certainly not professionals. Apologies if this article was meant to be light-hearted, but it certainly didn't come across that way.

      LolPlonk - 2011-07-19 17:57

Where is it written that the demographic for mascots are children?

      LolPlonk - 2011-07-20 12:37

@Reacher hahahah! wow! defensive are we? Do you have gay issues or can you not make a normal comment without going off the deep end?

      radar - 2011-07-20 15:58

Come on plonkers this mascot is a disgrace - as stated looks more like a hunchback overweight whale - no need to mess with what was a truly successful mascot. People responsible for this farcical mascot change ought to be sacked as they have a bizzarre perception of what a mascot should like look like and represent! My kids loved the old Sharkie, but think the new one is a joke!!

  • Sheriffff - 2011-07-19 15:40

whatever as longs as the boys keep winning I'm happy

  • Anneleen - 2011-07-19 15:40

Sharky in Slippers? Do not fear, it is what happens on the field that counts... Maybe the new-look Sharky has been thrown in the deep end, but i'm sure he/she will step it up? GO SHARKS!!!

      Gazza69 - 2011-07-20 08:45

  • Charles Small - 2011-07-19 15:52

Darwin couldn't possibly have foreseen this failure.

      Duane Vermeulen

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-07-19 16:52

@Kok, we employ Lloyd aka Dozer to scare the kids on match days . Providing Lloyd with this little job is a corporate social responsibility project ("sheltered employment")

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-07-19 16:53

PS: Lloyd - Duane is my mascot.

      jk - 2011-07-20 08:42

Kok.... WP have the hot female cheerleaders!!! But they wouldn't interest swing the other way......The Lions mascot is more up your alley. (no pun intended)

      The_Fox - 2011-07-20 12:27

      Het NZ 'n Mascot?

  • screamobaby - 2011-07-19 16:08

I dont think i could get use to this new shark.

  • wpmannetjie - 2011-07-19 16:17

    rather get a sardine i think !!!!!!

  • wcmanderson - 2011-07-19 16:23

i think this is a sharkie straight out of a graphic designers mindset and doesnt reflect the brand of the sharks or the fans!! Fail to the sharks management & fail to the designer of it...

      LolPlonk - 2011-07-19 18:02

Fail, fail, fail and one more time fail! I'm willing to bet the designer is not even a rugby supporter, let alone a Sharks supporter! Definately not in touch with the brand!

      levit8 - 2011-07-20 12:12

I agree 100% ... and from the reaction of a lot of my other sharks fan mates, this is an EPIC FAIL by the administrators !!

      radar - 2011-07-20 16:03

what a joke - to think they wanted to change a successful mascot to this shocker is a disgrace- people responsible should excuse themselves from the organisation. Before they know it the kids will be rejecting all the goodwill built up through the former loved Sharkie!!!!

  • Trevor - 2011-07-19 16:26

Doesn't bother me in the least... I quite like it. As long as we keep on winning, they can make the mascot a sandwich for all I care.

      Pieter - 2011-07-22 19:21

Go Sharks, thats all we need winning.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • terry - 2011-07-19 16:27

Well I was at the game on Saturday, and I gotta say that this new Sharky is a dismal flop - not only does he look a tad bloated, but he just disappeared during the game. The old Sharky used to run around behind the posts and keep the kids in the dugout areas amused - this new guy looks unfit and lazy. I think they better resurrect the old Sharky soon - whoever does the marketing for Sharky, this was a poor effort! Fortunately the Sharks on the field were more impressive.

  • Gungets Tuft - 2011-07-19 16:31

Gone from being a fly-half Sharkie to a Tighthead Sharkie.

  • Tooguy - 2011-07-19 16:31

No No No No, Bring the old sharky back but give him a new Black kit instead of grey and get rid of this hunch back whale!!!

  • Hammer - 2011-07-19 16:45

Looks more like a black and white frog......

  • StormBergBok - 2011-07-19 16:46

That's the problem with top-heavy organisations with loaded saddle-bags. Everyone's got to justify their existence, and so change for the sake of change becomes the order of the day. Can't decide which is the more ridiculous - the Highlander's new limp-wristed leprechaun strip, or the Sharks new Mickey Mouse 'roids mutant...

  • Kevin - 2011-07-19 16:48

So the 3d sharkie can't move....that costume obviously weighs a ton or the chap inside is not terriblly atheletic.Old sharkie had excellent repore with the youngsters....the new oke spent most of his time catching his breath in the change room.

  • bullincapeto - 2011-07-19 17:13

The guy wearing the sharkie is the problem, whensdeygonnabreak legs!!

  • taryn.muller - 2011-07-19 19:21

Firstly people - everybody calm down! The saying goes that "People hate change" and while the change in question is quite dramatic and as a huge Sharks supporter I adored the "old" Sharkie - personally I LOVE the new one too. Yes its totally different and yes Sharkie is himself a huge brand who continually grows in popularity and who is instantly recognisable to all us Sharks fans - the mascot was and still will be primarily aimed at entertaining the crowd and kids! Don't kid yourselves to think the mascot intimidates the rivals! Rugby is supposed to be fun and competitive for the whole family. Critics keep your critisism in the positive affirmative and make constructive suggestions and all of you, negative and aggressive "stick in the muds" you sound like those moany old age pensioners who complain a lot about everything and who groan on about how it used to be. Sharkie - you are my champion and I think you are fantastic. All our kids love you and all its going to take is a few adjustments and a new persona which is perfectly suited to your new suit!! Go Sharks and our new Sharkie!!!

  • Kleinboet - 2011-07-19 21:30

Forget about Sharkie! The Sharks have the prettiest girls, for sure. They started it and now everybody is doing it. Man, it does things to a me when those girls flash their S-H-A-R-K-S all over the place! I'm a Stormers/WP supporter and our girls are pretty, but those girls are really cooking!

  • Bulkalf - 2011-07-19 23:47

Lyk soos 'n boggelrug paddavis met tande !

  • That Guy Ty - 2011-07-20 09:41

'Some fan' clearly doesn't understand that Sharkie is an attraction for the kids - instilling fear through a mascot isn't the objective. Shame, he must also believe that bulls are blue.

  • Matt - 2011-07-20 10:28

The new mascot should be a Shark with a half-eaten Blue Bull in its mouth

  • nadia.gerber1 - 2011-07-20 10:46

  • SGL - 2011-07-20 11:01

Bring back the old Sharky - he had character.

  • AgileBee - 2011-07-20 11:16

Epic fail by Sharks marketing dept. New mascot looks like an over weight geriatric hunchback. Bring back the iconic Sharkie we have all grown to love!!

  • - 2011-07-20 11:37

    what is that????????????????????

  • get.go.richard - 2011-07-20 12:19

He looked more like an overweight killer whale, but was still able to eat a bull...!

  • get.go.richard - 2011-07-20 12:21

Most of the complainers about this story are Bulls fans - they're still upset about losing. Am waiting for one of them to blame the new Sharkie for their defeat...

  • jason11 - 2011-07-20 13:47

the previous sharky was allot more mobile and energetic... the new one is fat and lathargic.....couldnt even run ..nevermind tackle the opponents mascot. they have taken the fun factor out of sharky and replaced him with a ugly, dissapointing fat blob. We should start a movement to bring back the old sharky!!

  • andrevr1 - 2011-09-20 22:56

My Kids call him Bloat( the puffer fish in Nemo) i would rather watch the Bulls mascot than our new one The New Sharky SUCKS
