Sharks 'beware' of Goosen

Cape Town - Former Bok pivot, Louis Koen, has warned the Sharks that Free State's new flyhalf sensation, Johan Goosen, could pose a serious threat in their Currie Cup semi-final clash in Durban this weekend.

The 19-year old has cemented himself as the No 1 pivot in the Free State this season and despite being injured for the last two weeks, should be ready for action in the Shark Tank on Saturday.

Apart from having a deadly kicking-boot, Goosen also boasts a dangerous side-step, is solid on defence and spreads the ball well - all aspects which Koen believes makes him almost the complete flyhalf.

Goosen is expected to come up against Sharks flyhalf, Frederic Michalak, and Koen feels Goosen brings a lot more to the table than the Frenchman.

"Johan Goosen is a much more complete player than Frederic Michalak. He (Goosen) has all the weapons a flyhalf needs in his armoury. He is an upcoming rugby star who will make big strides in South African rugby," Koen told the Volksblad newspaper.

Koen believes Goosen's ability to slot long-range goals could damage the Sharks.

"The Sharks will need to be aware of Goosen's kicking boot and not concede penalties in their own territory. They'll need to pin Free State down in its own half and even be aware (of conceding penalties) there as well. If they underestimate his kicking boot, he will punish them badly," said Koen.

Koen does, however, believe Michalak's experience might enable him to get one over the youngster.

"I think Michalak might be a little bit less nervous than Goosen."
