Cape Town - Defending Currie Cup champions, the Sharks will have targeted Saturday’s match against the Cheetahs as a determining factor to their semi-final ambitions.
They are currently placed in third position on the log, one log point behind Western Province in second place and six points adrift of their opponents for this weekend.
Therefore a win for John Plumtree’s men will widen the gap to the chasing pack even more if they manage to beat their hosts, with only four matches remaining after this weekend’s action.
"We are only aiming to reach the semi-finals at this stage, because then it will be knockout rugby and anything can happen,” Plumtree told Thursday’s Die Burger.
Assistant coach, Grant Bashford expressed his frustration at their lack of accuracy and consistency.
“We are making too many basic and unforced errors. That is why we are unable to create any momentum. Some of our play against the Pumas was something to get excited about, but it was too sporadic,”
Bashford went onto say that Bloemfontein has been a happy hunting ground for the Sharks in recent years, which was not the case in the past.
Meanwhile Plumtree expects the Cheetahs to lift their game once more as he says that he expects a backlash from the hosts after they played to a draw against the Blue Bulls last Saturday.
“This is a home game for them and after they drew against the (Blue) Bulls at home, they will be motivated to beat us. It’s going to be a tough match.”
