Cape Town – Western Province are not too worried that Griquas flyhalf Earl Rose will disclose any of their secrets ahead of Saturday’s Currie Cup match at Newlands.
Rose is back in Kimberley after being a member of the Stormers camp during the closing stages of the Super Rugby tournament.
Province forwards coach Matthew Proudfoot said on Tuesday that they weren’t particularly concerned about Rose.
“I don’t think Earl can reveal anything more about our plans than an intelligent coach will be able to find out on his laptop. Everybody knows what we do. It’s not really a big secret,” said Proudfoot.
Rose linked up with the Stormers during the course of Super Rugby as Peter Grant, Lionel Cronjé, Gary van Aswegen and Kurt Coleman were all injured at stages during the tournament.
Rose joined up with the Stormers in Australasia and made a few appearances as a substitute.
The Cape side will now have to get themselves mentally fit for Currie Cup rugby. Several members of the squad still ran out against the Crusaders in a Super Rugby semi-final 10 days ago.
“We knew what was coming (with the schedule) and could plan accordingly,” said Proudfoot.
Province will hope that they can repeat last season’s success against Griquas on Saturday. They thumped Griquas 50-3 in Kimberley before beating them 48-32 in Cape Town later in the season.
Proudfoot believes Griquas will still pose a huge challenge for the home side.
“I don’t think they fear any of the ‘bigger sides’. They showed over the last few seasons that they are capable of beating any side on their day.
“They also have a number of players in their ranks like Sarel Pretorius (scrumhalf), Riaan Viljoen (fullback), Davon Raubenheimer (No 8) and Barry Geel (centre) who played very well for the Cheetahs in this year’s Super Rugby tournament.
“They are used to big games and have won big games.”
Province know the magnitude of the challenge and the one area they will have to improve from the Stormers’ last outing is the set phases.
The Stormers got a big hiding from the Crusaders in the scrums.
Proudfoot, who is responsible for the WP and Stormers packs, said they would definitely have to improve.
“The Crusaders have a good pack, but I don’t think we should put our poor performance down to that. We should rather look at our own performance and work hard on getting it right.”
Meanwhile, English club Bath formally announced on Tuesday that Stormers and Springbok flank Francois Louw will play for them for the next three seasons.
