Cape Town - Earl Rose is back in the rugby wilderness after he was not offered a new contract by the Griqualand West Rugby Union.

The Volksblad newspaper reports that the 27-year-old flyhalf and Griquas could not agree on a suitable offer. This comes barely a year after the union gave Rose's career a second life after the Lions let him go.

He played for Griquas is this year's Vodacom Cup but was overlooked for the Cheetahs' Super Rugby squad. He did, however, help out at the Stormers as a loan player but then struggled to make the Griquas' starting line-up in the recently concluded Currie Cup, playing second fiddle at flyhalf to Riaan Viljoen.

"We aimed to contract Earl Rose again, but in the end it wasn't possible as we couldn't agree on an amount with the involved parties," commented Griquas' chief executive, Arni van Rooyen.

With Viljoen off to the Sharks next season, Griquas have signed Blue Bulls flyhalf Marnitz Boshoff and Boland utility back Willie le Roux to fill the void left at No 10.

Rose's agent, Anthony Johnson, confirmed they are looking at other options, especially abroad.

And Rose said he wouldn't mind leaving South Africa. "I don't care if it is in South Africa or abroad, as long as I can play rugby."
