Pumas smash Griffons

Nelspruit - Carl Bezuidenhout scored 19 points as the Steval Pumas smashed the Down Touch Griffons 56-10 (half-time 25-3) in their Absa Currie Cup First Division match at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Friday.

According to the supersport.com website, flyhalf Bezuidenhout scored a try and kicked four conversions and three penalties while right wing JW Bell ran in a hat-trick of tries as the Pumas romped to their third successive win of the season to remain unbeaten.

The Griffons’ miserable season continued as they slumped to their third consecutive loss to remain winless in this year’s competition.

The Pumas were full value for their win on a cool evening in Nelspruit and they were rarely troubled by their opponents as the hosts ran in seven tries with the Griffons only managing to score one try, through inside centre Japie Nel, in the last minute of the match.

Bezuidenhout and Griffons outside centre Joubert Engelbrecht exchanged early penalties before Bell grabbed his first try in the 28th minute.

The score saw the Pumas take firm control if the match and they scored two more tries before the break, through flank Corne Steenkamp and Bell, while Bezuidenhout added a penalty and conversion as the hosts eased to half-time holding a 25-3 lead.

It was more of the same in the second half with Bezuidenhout kicking a penalty two minutes before the restart before the in-form pivot grabbed his try just two minutes later.

Bell completed his hat-trick in the 53rd minute as the Pumas secured their bonus-point try while they added to their margin with tries from eighthman RW Kember and left wing Rosko Spekman.

Scorers:

Steval Pumas – Tries: JW Bell (3); Corne Steenkamp, Carl Bezuidenhout, RW Kember, Rosko Spekman; Conversions: Bezuidenhout (4), Tiaan Marx (2); Penalties: Bezuidenhout (3).

Down Touch Griffons – Try: Japie Nel; Conversion: Joubert Engelbrecht; Penalty: Engelbrecht.
