Plumtree to gauge flyhalves

Johannesburg – You may have heard of a love triangle, but not a flyhalf triangle.

However, that is what the Sharks are facing next year, with three flyhalves set to compete for their No 10 jersey.

Two of them – Patrick Lambie and Jacques-Louis Potgieter – will square up in Saturday’s Currie Cup match between the Blue Bulls and Sharks at Loftus Versfeld.

The third, André Pretorius, may be on the Sharks’ substitutes bench.

Just a few months ago the Sharks were wondering where they’d find a quality flyhalf, but they will have to think about who to leave out come the Super 15.

This weekend’s match may be a good opportunity for coach John Plumtree to weigh up 19-year-old Lambie and Potgieter.

Sharks assistant coach Grant Bashford said that they had the ability to beat any team with the pattern they are currently playing when it comes off.

“The amount of tries (36) we have already scored shows that. It’s difficult to defend against us when we get things right and that is what we strive for. Even so, you have to be very accurate because you are on the back foot when you concede possession, which is what happened against Griquas,” said Bashford.

“The Sharks and Bulls usually bring the best out of one another. That is why we’re not reading too much into their defeat against the Pumas. The challenge against them will again be to force down our playing style. If that happens, we believe we can win.

“The players believe in themselves and use every opportunity to score tries. Charl McLeod and Pat Lambie are combining really well and are creating opportunities for the players on their outside.”
