Plumtree may not pick Boks

2011-08-01 22:12

Cape Town - Sharks coach John Plumtree says he may not pick some of his Springboks returning for this weekend's Currie Cup action.

The Sharks take on Griquas in Kimberley on Friday.

SARU on Monday released a group of 23 players involved in the Springboks’ preliminary Rugby World Cup squad to do duty for their provinces in the Currie Cup this weekend.

Adrian Jacobs, Patrick Lambie, Charl McLeod, Lwazi Mvovo, Odwa Ndungane, Alistair Hargreaves and Ryan Kankowski will be available for selection.

However, Plumtree says he is more than happy with the current crop of players at his disposal.

“I’m hoping we’ll get some reinforcements back to be able to give us a bit of a boost, but I’m really happy with the way this group is going, so if they can prove to me that they can keep playing like this, then some reputations might be sitting on the bench or not even playing, and that’s what you want,” Plumtree told Sharks website editor, Michael Marnewick.

“We’re pretty comfortable with this 22 at the moment. Unless there are some injuries, I don’t think I’ll be changing too much and they’ve got to keep proving to me that they can do it. Griquas is always a tough challenge for us, but it’s how we adapt and what we throw at them that really counts.”

If only this man could take P.Divvy's place as national coach! In fact any of the provincial coaches could do a far better job. Why? Because they have at least coached a professional rugby team. SA U21 does not count, J

I don't agree. He's like PDV also because he didn't have the guts to sideline John Smit in the starting line-up when he had no place.

      Makutu - 2011-08-02 01:40

Steam Engine, I think he was forced to field John Smit. Yhooo I am glad he leaving SA. No more woeful displays from him. The man was rated one of the worst defenders in the Super 15. How does he even get to be our Captain?

      420 - 2011-08-02 10:18

@Makutu - He is also a 100+ test veteran, that had lead his teams to RWC, Tri-Nations, British and Irish Lions and Currie Cup victories. His form may have dipped recently, but there is no denying his status as our most successful Captain ever. Legen..wait for it...dary!

      kosie - 2011-08-02 13:53

@420 and have you noticed how none of the players respect his leadership on the field anymore, especially the sharks

      BLOUBOK - 2011-08-02 21:03

All provincial coaches will be better than Snorre except NAKA.

Very mature attitude, continuity is key and the Sharks have a good thing going with this crop of youngsters (and a few old timers). Reckon AD will get a run though!

All a player asks for is to be recognised for performance and that is what Plum is doing. It is time to give Stephan a long rest though - nothing personal like you guys who attack our Captain - just that he is that yard or three too slow now.

i see they signed riaan viljoen for next year, stupid though cause we need centres not fullbacks

Hats off to you Mr Plumtree...fair is fair, and if your team are playing to your satisfaction then why change it? Nothing seems more unfair than to have your guys play throughout the tournament, only to be replaced by the Springboks after having done all of the hard work! Well said!!!

      BlueRaven - 2011-08-02 09:28

3 games into the Currie Cup is hardly the whole tournament

      Chillipop - 2011-08-02 10:27

@ BlueRaven...I wasnt talking about this year, but if you have a look at past tournaments, and it has happened with The Sharks, Blue Bulls and WP, and others, you get the average players playing their heart out for the first part of the tournament, while the other players are on Springbok duty, and when they return, those players get pushed aside and some of them dont even get game time after that...I dont think it's really fair. Almost like "Okay, you guys get us to the semi's etc and we will take the glory of winning" - surely even you dont think thats very fair?

Thank you coach, for acknowledging the value your current squad...stand your ground...Sharks forever!!!

      Chillipop - 2011-08-02 08:32

I am SO going to see that game!!! No way in hell that I am missing it...already checked yesterday and saw that I am missing the WP Sharks game at Newlands next weekend, but hell, wont miss it next time, that's for sure!

  • Michael - 2011-08-02 08:49

He will pick them.... U just can't admit that anyone has a place assured.

  • On the Verge - 2011-08-02 09:03

The bulls dream that they could be in this position... they always rant and rave about their own development, and that the sharks have to buy in players - but the sharks academy is starting to bear fruit - and the basis for this is that Plumtree is also head coach of the under 21 and under 19 sharks sides too - thus ensuring that the playing structures are the same in the junior ranks. Keep watching, the sharks academy is the future of springbok rugby, as plumtree is one of the few provincial coaches to adapt to the new sytle of ball in hand rugga. Bulle - Enjoy the wooden spoon this year...

      kosie - 2011-08-02 13:56

so why did they buy marius joubert and now they've bought riaan viljoen

      Oukoos - 2011-08-02 15:27

Die Blou Bulle hoef nie jong spelers te koop nie. Hulle kry die wit outjies wat Wakefield wegjaag met sy rassistiese stellings sommer verniet

  • atreyu_za - 2011-08-02 12:36

Bring the Bok players on as impact players late in the match. The Sharks find themselves in a great position at the moment.

  • Spike1977@24.com - 2011-08-02 12:54

No this guy just does not want to give any of the Springboks game time because his allegiance lies elsewhere.

      atreyu_za - 2011-08-02 13:07

Interesting opinion. The same thought did cross my mind, but I honestly don't think Plum is that kind of guy. He seems to have the Sharks team interest at heart. We will never know I suppose...
