Plumtree: Red cards aided us

2012-09-16 15:24

Durban - Sharks coach John Plumtree conceded that the two red cards handed out by referee Lourens van der Merwe were crucial in deciding the outcome of their 43-27 Currie Cup victory over Western Province in Durban on Saturday.

Loose forwards Tyrone Holmes and Jebb Sinclair were both sent off for punching, in a match which was played in heavy underfoot conditions, caused by sweeping rain, at Kings Park.

The match was a tight affair for the better part of an hour, with the hosts stretching their 16-12 half-time lead to 22-12 in the 53rd minute when Sinclair dropped Jean Deysel to the ground in the first incident.

Holmes followed suit 15 minutes later, receiving his marching orders for hitting Botes, while a yellow card for Wilhelm van der Sluys four minutes from time ensured the Cape side ended with 12 players.

"The red cards obviously had a huge influence on the game, which is unfortunate and not nice to see," Plumtree said after the game.

"But the referees have zero tolerance when it comes to punching and tip-tackling and that kind of thing. You just can’t do it.

"So, it was bad for them, but made our task a bit easier."

Plumtree said the Province discipline was a worry for the competition and was disappointing to see.

"You don’t want to see it, because it’s obviously not something good," he said.

"You’ve got refs, you’ve got assistant refs, you’ve got TMOs now watching, so players just can’t get away with it.

"Possibly, the yellow card at the end was a bit harsh, but things just weren’t going for them. That can happen. It was a pretty niggly sort of game."

The KwaZulu-Natal side outscored their opponents by four tries to two thanks to a brace of scores by flanker Jacques Botes, added to a Keegan Daniel effort and a penalty try.

Province's tries came in the form of a double from scrumhalf Louis Schreuder.

"I think everyone added a little bit to the performance," Plumtree said.

"Obviously, the tactical kicking was important, territory was the main emphasis from both teams.

"We knew we were up against a pretty organised Western Province forward pack. I think we contained them for a lot of the game.

"I thought we got our tactics right tonight. Meyer [Bosman], Riaan Viljoen and Cobus Reinach had a huge role to play in the end."

The Sharks boss, whose team is now second on points difference at the summit of the log, is desperate to back up their showing with another good one against the table-topping Lions in Johannesburg next week.

"The Lions have probably improved 30-40 percent since we played them last, they won at Loftus and now they won in Bloemfontein," he said.

"We know how hard it is to win at Ellis Park (Coca-Cola Park).

"Hopefully, we’ll put it all together and put on a performance that we’re proud of."

Seriously children. Grow up with the slinging matches. Thuggery is not acceptable in any form, no matter where you come from or who you play for. Embarrassment to SA rugby!

      macziekpk - 2012-09-17 09:41

Ban these children for life! Sinclair and holmes thugs of the year, disgrace to rugby, disgrace to the CUrrie Cup. Ban for life. This is as bad as throwing a game, like Hansie

      macziekpk - 2012-09-17 09:47

22m drop, Schreuder scores Should have been a 5m scrum to the Sharks and the Sharks would have scored. Cheating officials can't even help them, they are their own worst enemy these WP chokers

Very magnanimous Mr. Plumtree! I'm just wondering how much instigation your players needed to deliberately provoke the WP players. The linesman saw the Sharks player preventing the WP player from playing by hanging on to his jersey, and did nothing, until the WP player retaliated, only then did he do something. Poor show assistant referee and poor show Lourens vd Merwe! The retaliation rule MUST be changed and both players must be equally punished!

      malcolm.molver - 2012-09-16 17:16

There is no excuse for punching! So don't even try to offer one

Stormers player was actually pulling on Deysels jersey and he was trying to get away from him. U could even hear him saying to let go...commentator even said about Deysel being held back. Bresler was also being held back by his jersey...he was in front of the Stormers player so u could see he wasn't provoking him. The whole game they played badly, captain wasn't any better than the rest of the team too. Sharks deserved the win

I'm sorry but I don't normally comment as people just write a load of nonsense but I felt the need to just have my say! 1st are we playing rugby or have we moved to boxing? No matter what, punching is NOT part of the game and should in no sense be tollerated! 2nd everyone is blamming JD but not one wp surrporter says anything about him being pulled around by his head moments before the slap! Yes he got knocked down, but really, is this what we telling all the youngsters out there, if things don't go your way, just punch him in the face??? Gr8 example guys! Yellow card was very harsh! Personally the officials where shocking both ways, but does that really make you punch people??? Cause then SA rugby is in trouble! I also thought both teams played pretty well until the two punch ups! Pitty that two players can stuff up a hard fought effort from both sides! Imo of coarse ;) well played from both sides!

      blou.johnny - 2012-09-16 21:54

...Sinclair and Holmes...? ....stupid fools... ..they are a disgrace....!

      freddie.f.strydom - 2012-09-16 23:24

@johnny. Please don't comment on my posts as you just write a bunch of 11 1 11!!!! Thank you!

      alfred.neuman.988 - 2012-09-17 09:04

You should comment more often. I also thought the yellow was harsh until I noticed that the jump only commenced after the ball was kicked. It was way too late to be an attempted charge down. If you watched the Griqwas game the week before you will have noticed that the Griqwas players employed the same tactics against the Sharks to good effect. The only difference was the ref turned a blind eye to it. Can't blame AC for using it as a tacttic.

      macziekpk - 2012-09-17 09:43

Punching has been part of this game for years and year only now it has become banned. Well if that is the case, ban these reprobates. For life! Otherwise bring back fighting and bring back raking. Then we will see less breakdown penalties. Imagine being scared of Dean Greylings forearm? McCaw won't be sitting next to the ruck anymore fingering the ball. The only way to really decide some of these Currie Cup games is with a good boxing match

      macziekpk - 2012-09-17 09:45

Didn't WP get a 22 drop and a break away try from Shroder when it should have been a 5m try scoring opportunity try in that game? Pietersen carried it over. Cheating officials. Trying to get the WP to win, but even with the refs in their pocket they threw the game away by using thuggery. Idiots
