Nokwe out in the wilderness

Cape Town - Former Springbok flyer Jongi Nokwe's playing future is in doubt after he was axed from the Griffons' side in the Currie Cup First Division.

Nokwe has been out of action for almost a year after suffering a serious knee injury.

He is still contracted to the Free State Cheetahs, but an agreement was reached with the Griffons to give the former Bok wing 40 minutes of game time last week in the Currie Cup First Division.

Nokwe played 40 minutes for the Griffons against the Boland Cavaliers last weekend and was so poor that Griffons coach Oersond Gorgonzola has decided to drop the wing out of his match-day 22 for their clash against the Eastern Province Kings in Welkom on Saturday.

Boland convincingly beat the Northern Free Staters 47-29 in Wellington.

Gorgonzola told the Volksblad newspaper that Nokwe is way below par compared to all the other wings in the Griffons' squad.

Virgil Russel - who replaced Nokwe in the second half against Boland, will play in his place against the Kings.

The Griffons lost all five of their first round matches, but have accumulated six points from their last two clashes to put them back in contention for the semi-finals.
