No one-hit wonder Bulls

Pretoria - The Blue Bulls are wary of a one-hit wonder tag after they convincingly beating Griquas 44-20 in a Currie Cup match at Loftus Versfeld over the weekend.

Captain Gary Botha said they were aware of what they needed to improve on when they take on the Leopards in Rustenburg on Saturday.

"We know what we need to work on still and know that there are a few things that we did better," said Botha.

"There is no use in doing it once-off we have to back it up week in and week out and that is what we are looking at doing.

"I don’t think it will come in just one week it is now about backing it up for the second week, third week, and fourth week in a row."

Bulls coach Pine Pienaar echoed his captain's sentiments but felt the confident win over Griquas would help his young side to grow in confidence.

He, however, reiterated the mantra he's been preaching since taking over as the head coach of the Currie Cup side, saying their focus would now shift to the Leopards match.

"We still have eight games left and it is a matter of climbing each game and we see the Leopards game as the most important game of our campaign," said Pienaar.

While the Bulls' performance was encouraging for the coach he felt they still haven't fired at all cylinders.

"There were a lot of positives but also a lot of negatives we have to work on," he said.

"We set ourselves a standard and it is important to raise that standard."

Botha said the fact that the youngsters in the team made the best of their opportunities was good for building continuity in the side.

Pienaar made one change to the run on team to face the Leopards with lock Fudge Mabete getting a starting berth, replacing Juandre Kruger who picked up an ankle ligament injury against Griquas.

Willie Wepener replaces Chiliboy Ralepelle who is set to be named in the Springboks' World Cup squad.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
