Cape Town - Western Province's injury curse has struck again after their impressive Currie Cup victory over the Sharks in Durban over the weekend.
Promising 21-year-old fullback, Heinrich Steyl, will miss the rest of the season after breaking both bones in his leg at the Shark Tank on Saturday. It was confirmed on Monday that Steyl will be sidelined for about nine months.
Steyl - who left the field in the first half in Durban - was replaced at fullback by Conrad Jantjes. Jantjes was initially named on the Province bench after suffering from a slight niggle. He completed the game in Durban but is also in doubt for Saturday's clash against the Golden Lions in Johannesburg.
However, the WP coaches will be more worried about the availability of scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenage. Duvenage was the hero for Province on Saturday - scoring a 78th minute try to snatch a 15-10 victory - but injured his ankle in the process of scoring and could miss this weekend's action.
His ankle is bruised and he will be given as much time as possible to recover.
It wasn't all bad news for the Capetonians on Monday though. Centre Johann Sadie - who started from the bench on Saturday due to a slight thigh niggle - will be available for the trip to Johannesburg, while prop JC Kritzinger should also be ready after he injured his shoulder against the KwaZulu-Natalians.
Reserve scrumhalf Nick Groom (knee), flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis (bicep) and loose forward Nick Koster (neck) are all expected to be available for selection this week after respective injury lay-offs.
WP currently occupy fourth sport on the log standings with 36 points, three ahead of the fifth placed Blue Bulls. After their clash against the Lions, they conclude their round-robin phase with a home game against the Pumas.
