Milestone for Blue Bulls trio

2009-10-28 12:20

Pretoria - The Blue Bulls' Springbok trio of Bakkies Botha, Victor Matfield and Fourie du Preez will celebrate their 50th appearances for the Blue Bulls when they play against the Free State Cheetahs in the Currie Cup final on Saturday.

Du Preez played his 50th match for the union in the semi-final against Western Province, but the Blue Bulls' custom is to celebrate your half century at Loftus Versfeld.

The trio, who have played an enormous role in the Blue Bulls' success over the last few years, will lead the team onto the field.

Botha started his provincial career with the Valke in 1999 and two years later, in 2001, he started playing for the Blue Bulls. He made his Super Rugby as well as Springbok debut in 2002 and has since played in 63 Tests for South Africa.

Botha also holds the world record with his good friend Victor Matfield for most Tests as a lock combination in the starting line-up (53).

Matfield first played for the Blue Bulls as a 20-year-old in 1998. After representing the Griquas in 1999 and 2000 he was again contracted by the Blue Bulls in 2001. Matfield is a veteran of 89 Tests and has captained the Boks in 10 Tests.

Du Preez, who is a couple of years younger than Matfield and Botha, made his provincial debut for the Blue Bulls in 2001. After first playing Super Rugby in 2003 he played his first Test for South Africa in 2004. He has 52 Test caps.

Surely Victor has played in more than 50 games for the bulls? if you take into account that he joined the bulls in 1998, and has been playing currie cup and super 12/14 rugby since then. then in order for him to only reach 50 caps now, he'd have to have played about 4 games for them a year on average, doesn't seem right at all, I mean this year alone, he's played about 20 provincial games (15 Super rugby games, and +- 5 currie cup). maybe the writer is only referring to currie cup caps?

  • Sharky Andrew - 2009-10-28 12:50

lol. was just reading up on victor matfield on wikipedia, and i see he's got some Maori blood in him, through his grandmother. lol. I reckon I'll be reminding the bulls fans about that little piece of info when they start giving the other unions a hard time about recruiting foreign players in future ;-)

  • Megabull - 2009-10-28 12:50

    Thanks Boys! GO BULLE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • JC - 2009-10-28 13:03

Sharky, That's only currie cup matches.

  • Bull's bull - 2009-10-28 13:05

They distinguish games from the Blue Bulls (Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup) from the Bulls (Super franchise) from the Boks... But yes, I would also have thought that all three players had more than 50 Currie Cup appearances, but because of Bok duty, they probably don't get to play that many...

  • Malume - 2009-10-28 13:08

They must recalculate how many games Bakkies really played. If you add all the minutes he spends on the sin bin since 2001 the game count will be reduced significantly.

  • Grogg - 2009-10-28 13:09

Don't forget Victor Matfield played for the CATS too.

  • piet - 2009-10-28 13:11

Please forget about the milestones acieved Bulls and focus on Saturday's win first, then it will be a milestone. I'm really concerned about them focusing on all these side issues.

  • Johhnno - 2009-10-28 13:16

Surely this is not right... More games for the Boks than the Bulls??

  • Hennie - 2009-10-28 13:16

Sharky they are referring to Currie Cup matches only, super rugby matches aren't included. Bakkies has played 71 super rugby matches, Victor 77 and Fourie 71.

  • Dude - 2009-10-28 13:29

@Sharky andrew 50th Curry Cup Cap maybe excluding Super rugby? I can also not believe that he has played one less than Fourie as Fourie would have had to come out from underneath Joost. But with all the internationals it could be 50 Curry Cup caps

  • Megabull - 2009-10-28 13:31

@ Sharky Andrew 50 CC games not counting Super rugby.

  • Blue bull - 2009-10-28 13:33

What the writer means it will be Botha, Matfield & Du preez 50th Cap together as trio at Loftus, not there individual stats at the bulls

  • Craai - 2009-10-28 13:34

@Sharky, they don't take into account super rugby games, only CC

  • TheEditor - 2009-10-28 13:36

Nope this is correct, with the Boks not playing much CC games; you will often find that Boks have played more games for the Green and Gold, than they actually have for their province, as in their case. A BIG congrats to the BIG boys!! Make us proud on Saturday boys!

  • Chuck Norris - 2009-10-28 13:37

Please Bakkies...! Dont be to harsh on the Cheetahs coming Saturday... Please dont hurt them...! Be gentle...

  • BlouBulletjie - 2009-10-28 13:45

Shame mommy's boy, go get a glass of pink milk from mommy.....and don't forget to "burp" him mommy.

  • Milestonesemur - 2009-10-28 16:53

  • W - 2009-10-28 18:43

@ Mike,DBN - Sharks don't have a say here - the only twit is 'little' Terblanche. Stop choking, then you can have a word

  • Bloutrein - 2009-10-29 08:54

One day robocop decided to have children, to ensure that the kids were'nt toaster ovens he asked a very significant special "other" to help. Because Superman also loved kids he decided that robocop's proposition appeals to him, and he had the only body on the planet that could farther such powerfull children. Unfortunately they both lacked the inside to see that their combined offspring would be much to powerfull for them to handle. So when the baby, whom they called BB was one year old Robocop caught the child while he was beating up a grisly bear that took his food. Not thinking robocop gave the baby a spanking. The baby killed robocob, and when superman intervened he put him in a wheelchair. In his weakened state superman decided that the baby would be much to powerfull for him. So he decided that it would be best for all to send the baby to South Africa where he could grow up to be a hero. FROM ALL BLUE BULLS AND SPRINGBOK RUGBY SUPPORTERS WE THANK YOU ROBOCOP AND SUPERMAN FOR GIVING US BAKKIES BOTHA. GO BULLS

  • @ Blou Bul Wyfie - 2009-10-29 09:16

  • Bulla - 2009-10-29 09:22

Victor Matfield is 'n beter senter as die Cheetahs se Meyer Bosman en Corne Uys..... ...Go Bulls..!!!

  • blou bul wyfie - 2009-10-29 10:36

get with the program or shhhh....we are not talking about PTA name change...we are talking about the best rugby team in the world!!! GO THE BULLS!!!

  • Victoria Matchfix - 2009-10-29 10:43

Vickey are certainly the twin sister of the Great Khalil?

  • @Bloutrein - 2009-10-29 11:09

So, the Blue Bulls superiority is just a "wolholhaarstorie!" Thanks, you just proved a point! In yester years, the bulls had to station the police acadamy in pretoria to be able to source their pathetic little team with players. Nowadays they poach players, esp from WP, to keep the supply chain going. Blue Bull rugby would be nothing with just players originating for pretoria! So who really won the CC in all those years????

  • Bloues - 2009-10-29 12:17

I cant wait until Monday when all these other idiots will be weeping somewhere else. Then the Bulls supporters can make a few interesting comments.

  • Megabull - 2009-10-29 12:48

    Agreed Bloues

  • Whitey - 2009-10-29 13:57

Saturday, .. it is the Bulls vs Rest of SA ...Go Bulls..!!!

  • bb highlight - 2009-10-29 16:13

The only "high light" the blue bull supporters are going to see in their "girlie" team this weekend: Is Wynanda Olliemuur's highlighted hair!!!

  • Jan - 2009-10-30 06:43

@bb highlight Sorry cheeters, that old ollie le roux with his gay-bob-hairstyle Isn't there to entertain you anymore.....
