Mapoe to skipper Lions

Johannesburg - Golden Lions head coach Johan Ackermann has named his 22-man side to front Western Province in a Currie Cup clash at Ellis Park on Saturday.

In the backline, Lionel Mapoe shifts to outside centre with Stokkies Hanekom moving into the inside centre berth, while Courtnall Skosan has been recalled to the starting side at left wing.

Ricky Schroeder will start at scrumhalf in the place of Ross Cronje, who is ruled out for up to three weeks with a knee injury.

Up front, Willie Britz will start at No 8 in place of Derick Minnie. Minnie captained the Lions against the Bulls last week but injured his hand in the match at Loftus Versfeld and will also be out for up to three weeks.

Mapoe has been chosen to captain the side.

Kwagga Smith has also been called up to the starting XV at flank, with Armand van der Merwe to start at hooker.

Flank Jaco Kriel will need to pass a late medical test in order to start this weekend, after sustaining a minor calf injury at Tuesday’s training session.

On the bench, Malcolm Marx will cover hooker and will look to make his Currie Cup debut should he get a run out, while Michael Bondesio has been called up to provide scrumhalf cover.

The match will get under way at 17:05.
