Bloemfontein – Sevens Springbok Lionel Mapoe will hear next week whether he will play for the Free State or Sharks in this year’s Currie Cup.
The arbitration case involving the contractual dispute over the player’s services was heard on Thursday and the outcome should be known next week.
The wing has trained with the Sharks since the start of the Currie Cup, but cannot play for them as Free State claim they have a valid contract with him. They are therefore refusing to issue a clearance certificate.
Advocate Bertus van Rhyn is the arbitrator. He also handled the case involving scrumhalf JP Joubert between the Lions and Free State earlier this year. Joubert was cleared to play for the Lions.
Free State president Harold Verster said that Van Rhyn realised Mapoe was an urgent matter and that he will finalise his ruling as soon as possible.
The Free Staters will hope to strike a blow in their tug-of-war with the Sharks to gain the player’s services.
Sport24’s exclusive revelation that Springbok centre Meyer Bosman will be joining the Sharks after the Currie Cup was also confirmed this week.
A former Free Stater and Grey College pupil Piet Lindeque helped to beat the Free State under-19 side here last Saturday. The centre scored the first of the Lions’ four tries in their 33-13 win over the home side.
On top of that the Sharks have managed to gain the services of promising Grey College centre Paul Jordaan. He was an outstanding player for the Free State side that was crowned unofficial champions at this year’s Craven Week.
