Pretoria - The Blue Bulls were given a double bout of good news as they named their team to face the Leopards in their Currie Cup match at Loftus Versfeld on Friday.

There was the initial good news that Springbok midfielder Jaco Pretorius has recovered sufficiently from his stress fracture to his foot and will start a match for the first time since the Super 14 final in May.

Then just before coach Frans Ludeke walked out to face the media the news came through that errant lock Flip van der Merwe had only received a “strong warning” for a wayward punch in last weekend’s game against the Lions.

Van der Merwe was cited after the game and had to attend a disciplinary hearing in Johannesburg on Monday, but the news means he could be selected for the match and get some more game time before the Tri-Nations resumes.

This came as the Bulls showed their depth once again by being able to rest regular captain Gary Botha, winger Sello Mametsa and tighthead prop Werner Kruger even though they have almost an entire team out of action at the moment.

Chiliboy Ralepelle will start at hooker in the place of Botha, who has been given a complete break this week. This means that another Bok hooker – Bandise Maku – will be on the bench.

Kruger has played an amazing amount of rugby and hasn’t missed a Bulls or Blue Bulls game for the last two years, so the break is both needed and well-deserved. His place is taken by former Leopards and Griquas prop Bees Roux who after a long spell on the bench will make his first Currie Cup start for the Blue Bulls this Friday.

The team will be captained by flanker Derick Kuün in the absence of Botha, with Pretorius replacing Stephan Dippenaar and former Boland winger Hayden Groepes coming in for Mametsa on the left wing.

On the bench another former Cape player – Dustin Jinka – who starred for Hamiltons last year in the National Club Championships, will make his debut for the defending champs and Frik Kirsten is back from a neck injury to cover the front row.

Blue Bulls:

Jaco van der Westhuyzen, Gerhard van den Heever, Jaco Pretorius, Stefan Watermeyer, Hayden Groepes, Jacques-Louis Potgieter, Francois Hougaard, Gerrit-Jan van Velze, Dewald Potgieter, Derick Kuün (captain), Juandré Kruger, Flip van der Merwe, Bees Roux, Chiliboy Ralepelle, Jaco Engels

Replacements: Bandise Maku, Frik Kirsten, Mthunzi Mabeta, CJ Stander, Dustin Jinka, Francois Brummer, Stephan Dippenaar.

  • Blou Bulle BO! - 2010-08-03 15:14

Nice to see Jaco vd Westhuysen being picked so frequently. I like him very much. He has nice legs.

  • StuartW - 2010-08-03 15:23

Ou Flip kan sy sterre dank dat hy net 'n waarskuwing gekry het....kan nie sien dat die Luiperds veel gaan kan doen nie....nes die WP is die Bulle hopeloos te sterk vir hulle

  • peebo - 2010-08-03 15:47

we have another Bakkies being rolled out of the thug factory

  • Watch this space - 2010-08-03 15:49

Yeah we let him get away with it; then he tries it in bok colors and get's banned for nine weeks and only then wants to cry on TV saying how much he loves god and how sorry he is......sort out the discipline immediately and we may avoid it in a bok jersey

  • Rugby Supporter - 2010-08-03 15:50

@ alias Blue Bull Hater - I don't read the nonsence you utter and regard you as the weak link in all the blog's I've participated in - I do have to mention though that it's so good to notice that nobody has even bothered to comment on the utter rubbish you choose to share with the rest of the world so frequently - Your poor taste in the selection of a name for yourself serves as confirmation of the fact that you are in fact what you call yourself - and a useless one at that!

  • steve - 2010-08-03 15:54

Why is it that the Bulls get away with this type of dirty play who is scared of them PLEASE

  • Richard - 2010-08-03 16:16

So it seems that Punching is allowed in Curry Cup rugby now, then they wonder why we get crusified in the Super 14 and Tri nations,SARU is spineless as they can only talk and never follow it up with any action

  • Johann - 2010-08-03 16:36

Dit was duidelik dat die Leeus haker vir van der Merwe aspris getart het in die hoop dat hy 'n geel kaart sal kry. Gelukkig het "common sense" geseevier.

  • Dave - 2010-08-03 16:41

Would love to know what goes through some of you minds - Chiliboy should not even be in the team = far better players than him and please help - never make a Captain again!!!!!!!!! I am WP fanatic but enjoy the rugby the Bulls play - good hard rugby - and yes they do go too far at times - but hey so do WP / Sharks etc etc !!!!! Get out there guys and enjoy your game.

  • GD - 2010-08-03 17:10

Seems SARU have a differnet set of rules to SANZAR and the rest of the world as punching is considered OK

  • Boss Barry - 2010-08-03 17:15

man o man POLITICS POLITICS ! Chilliboy is flippen useless !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mike2 - 2010-08-03 17:48

Dis jammer.

  • bulawayo-based-bok - 2010-08-03 20:02

what are they up to???.....dropping dippenaar and ruan snyman?? they are two of the most talented youngsters in SA rugby!!! who even is Dustin Jinka and Groepes is an average transformation "tick box" :)......Maku should be starting, chilliboy is now an excuse for a sportsmen and Jaco vd Westhuizen isn't sharp enough at the back!

  • SKER - 2010-08-04 08:00

...He he he ..!!

  • Far and Away - 2010-08-05 14:16

Werner Kruger is truly under rated as a prop. He was solid the entire S14 season, and he and the Bulls front row exposed the Stormers in the final - so much so that John Smith named "them" his man of the match. He also has one of the best "ruck clearing" records in his team. This, with the fact that he has not missed a game in two years tells me that he is committed and prepared to do the hard yards. He is young, and i think he can develop into a worthy International tighthead. Sure he is not flashy, but is he not worth a look, with our current crop of pretenders at no.3?
