Lions opt for continuity

Johannesburg - Golden Lions coach John Mitchell on Tuesday made one change to his run-on side for the team’s Currie Cup clash against Western Province in Cape Town on Friday.

At tighthead, Patric Cilliers returns in place of Jacobie Adriaanse, who swaps places with him and will start off the bench.

In the only change to last week’s match-22, Michael Rhodes returns to the bench in place of Joe Snyman.

Mitchell, who raised some eyebrows when he selected winger Lionel Mapoe at outside centre, was vindicated by a good performance in midfield by Mapoe, who gets another run as outside centre. His partner Alwyn Hollenbach, who was substituted after 43 minutes with a shoulder injury, is fit and will want to continue his exciting first-half form against Western Province.

Unbeaten after five matches, the Lions have a daunting task this weekend against last year’s Currie Cup finalists who will be smarting following two successive defeats, against the Free State Cheetahs and the Lions, in their last two matches.

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
