Lions hold thumbs on Whiteley

Cape Town - As they prepare to host the Sharks in a Currie Cup clash on Saturday, the Golden Lions are hoping for some good news regarding the availability of skipper Warren Whiteley.

Whiteley recently returned to the Lions after failing to make the final Springbok Rugby World Cup squad, but a calf injury preventing him from playing in their last two matches.

The Lions medical staff have announced that Whiteley is responding well to treatment but he will have to undergo a late fitness test to determine his availability for this weekend.

Should Whiteley fail his fitness Test, flank Jaco Kriel will again lead the side.

Late decisions will also be made on the availability of lock Martin Muller and scrumhalf Ross Cronje, who are both struggling with ankle injuries.

In other injury news, prop Dylan Smith has recovered from a shoulder injury and is available for selection, while loose forward Jano Venter will be sidelined with an ankle injury.

Kick-off for Saturday’s clash at Ellis Park is scheduled for 14:30.
