Lions deny player exodus

2012-08-18 10:04

Johannesburg - The President of the Golden Lions Rugby Union Kevin de Klerk on Friday issued the following statement in the wake of the SARU General Council decision to exclude the MTN Lions from the Super Rugby competition in 2013.

The statement reads:

“As stated before, the decision taken at the SARU General Council meeting yesterday to eliminate the Lions from Super Rugby in 2013 is very disappointing. Media speculation of an immediate exodus of players have created further uncertainty amongst supporters and stakeholders and Lions management therefore deem it prudent to confirm that the larger group of senior players are contracted at least until 31 October 2013. This list of senior players so contracted include, amongst others:

1 JANSE V RENSBURG, JC
2 VAN DER LINDE, CJ
3 VISAGIE, CALLIE
4 CILLIERS, PAT
5 ROODT, HENDRIK
6 VAN DER MERWE, FRANCO
7 MINNIE, DERICK
8 KRIEL, JACO
9 RHODES, MICHAEL
10 GREEFF, STEPHAN
11 STRAUSS, JOSH
12 WHITELEY, WARREN
13 BONDESIO, MICHAEL
14 CRONJE, ROSS
15 MOOLMAN, WHESTLEY
16 JANTJIES ELTON (during SupeRugby 2013, the player may elect to play at a different franchise if the Lions are not participating in SupeRugby).
17 CRONJE, GUS
18 TAUTE, JACO
19 HOLLENBACH, ALWYN
20 MAPOE, LIONEL
21 DES FOUNTAIN, DYLAN
22 MOOLMAN, BRADLEY
23 VAN RENSBURG, DEON
24 HELBERG, DEON
25 COETZEE, ANDRIES
26 KAMANA, JAMES

Management and players will meet next week to strategise and plan, but for now everyone is focused on the match against the Sharks.

for his sake I hope that the contracts were'nt done by the same guy that did Alberts,Luddick and Jaque Fourie's contracts.we all know that they were'nt worth the paper they were written on

      FeebleGastro - 2012-08-18 11:52

      And way back AJ Venter's.

      goyougoodthing - 2012-08-18 12:23

It's not about contracts anymore, the constitution was changed which 'supposedly' means that contract negotiations cannot begin whilst another is in place.

SARU as usual have made a BIG mistake by excluding the Lions from the Super Rugby competition because of their "poor" performance. Do they think that the Kings will do any better or is this also a case of pacifying the Watsons to stop them from calling on the support from the ANC/sports minister?

We absolutely need a franchise in the EC, but this is not the way to go about it. Instead of using the Super 15 to develop a team, Saru and the EC should've started development all those many years ago and perhaps by now they could've been playing next year on merit instead. Shame on Saru, they've dragged their feet on the issue and are now taking the easy way out.

Now theres a thought that carries a lot of merit!!!!

The Lions should make their players available to the other franchises during Super rugby. This way they will keep their players and the players will still get the experience. Might be nice for them to all come back to the Lions and share what they learnt at other unions. That is all other unions except the queens, let them play with their vodacom cup team and captain puke, would be entertaining to watch them getting smash every weekend. GO LIONS!!

...they dropped the wrong team from the Super competition... ...They should have dropped the 11 year loser choker Stormers team from the competition...! ...11 years.. ....Zero cups... ....Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ...!

      Andre - 2012-08-18 13:00

LOL what a dumb thing to say! Your hate for the Stormers seems to influence your intelligence..

  • mark.barker.370 - 2012-08-18 13:41

Obviously they will lose players and only idiots believe that the Kings will play super rugby with their Vodacom squad. Several big name over seas players have already signed with them and they will be competitive. More so than the L(osers)ions. Wouldn't it be a hoot if these clowns were out for more than one season - Can't wait.

      tokolos.tokkie - 2012-08-18 15:36

Cant' wait to hear your big mouth after the Lions teach them a rugby lesson in a relegation match after next year's S15 where they will surely be wooden spooners. Who will be the losers then you IDIOT!!!!

      mark.polley.336 - 2012-08-18 20:52

This being political, the queens will demand to win the S15

      wesley.td - 2012-08-19 00:04

Wouldn't signing outside players defeat the purpose of letting the Kings into super rugby? This was suppose to be about growing rugby in the province. Not simply creating a new banner under which to buy lions or any other SA teams fringe players?

  • paul.nel.376 - 2012-08-18 15:05

Sack SARU for irrational decisions! Perhaps the Lions should join the six nations next year.

      mark.barker.370 - 2012-08-18 15:15

Doubt they would want the Lions you idiot!!!

  • bok.esterhuizen - 2012-08-19 09:02
