Lions content with No 2 spot

2012-10-11 18:00

Johannesburg - Golden Lions coach Johan Ackermann cannot see Griquas beating the Sharks - hence his decision to field a weaker team against the Blue Bulls at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday.

Ackermann on Thursday made eight changes to his starting XV, as a precautionary measure, for their final round-robin Currie Cup clash.

The men from Johannesburg are already guaranteed a spot in next week's playoffs and Ackermann has opted to rest his key players for this weekend's Jukskei derby.

The hosts, already assured of a home semi-final, are likely to remain in second place on the log unless Griquas beat table toppers the Sharks in Durban on Friday. If Griquas win, and the defending champions beat their Pretoria neighbours, they will finish top and secure themselves a potential home final.

"I had to make a decision, hoping Griquas do us a favour, and on that hope, risk some key players," Ackermann said after he named his team on Thursday.

"Or I must go with my gut feeling and say, if they are not going to win, I have the opportunity to rest some key players that have played a lot of rugby."

Ackermann said he made his decisions based on the assumption that the coastal side would cement their place at the top of the standings with a victory over the Peacock Blues.

"I'm just going to back that and go with the scenario where I believe the Sharks will win and we will have no doubts on Monday when we start choosing the side," he said.

"I want the core group of guys fit and I still believe there are players that really need that rest."

The Lions mentor has picked only two of his returning Springbok players, with Pat Cilliers replacing Jacobie Adriaanse at tighthead prop and CJ van der Linde replacing JC Janse van Rensburg at loosehead.

The side's star flyhalf, Elton Jantjies, could be given an opportunity to face his Bulls counterpart Morné Steyn off the bench.

Lions stalwart Franco van der Merwe will move to the bench with Paul Willemse taking his place at lock in the run-on side.

In the backline, Anthony Volmink will receive a starting berth in the place of Ruan Combrinck who shifts to fullback in place of Andries Coetzee.

Ackermann has made wholesale changes to his loose trio with Cobus Grobbelaar, Jaco Kriel and Warren Whiteley replaced by Jaco Kriel, Derick Minnie and Willie Britz respectively.

With regular captain Janse van Rensburg rested for the clash, flyhalf Butch James will for the first time in his illustrious career captain a side at professional rugby level.

While the Lions have taken the luxury of resting some of their players, the Bulls have been given a boost with the return of their Springboks.

The Pretoria side will be crossing the Jukskei river determined to secure a playoff spot with a victory and in the process avoid the relegation zone.

Ackermann insisted the Lions had not made the task significantly easier for the Bulls.

"Regardless of what side we selected it would be a tough game because they (the Bulls) will be a full-strength side," Ackermann said.

"We are going out to win the game and there is no doubt in my mind that the players will feel the same.

"If the Bulls are good enough to beat us with the team they bring, then they deserve a place in the semis."

Ackermann, however, sent a stern warning to the Bulls not to underestimate his side.

"It is definitely not a given that they are going to win and hopefully the Bulls don't think that way, otherwise they are going to have a surprise."

If the Bulls win, they will not be at the bottom of the log. Does this have anything to do with the decision ?

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-11 18:10

      Huh?

      ben.spreeth - 2012-10-11 18:18

      Ackerman is an ex-Bull.

      godfrey.welman - 2012-10-11 18:20

Fortunately for him the Sharks game is on Friday, so he will know the result before kick-off against the Bulls.

This is a headline you would associate with the WP and Stormers. Just can't pull it through for the trophy

      matt.prinsloo.1 - 2012-10-12 08:18

Time to return the favour since the Bulls voted vs the Kings... Snaaks genoeg, die 2 unies wat teen die Kings gestem het is die 2 wat die meeste gebaat het uit Oos Kaapse spelers.

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-12 08:42

Matt, gaan vreet nog n pie, toe. Idioot.

when the weepee lose tonight, they will be at the bottom of the log. Does this have anything to do with the decision??

@apart1heid - WP won 36-15. as you were saying, want to revise your daft premature comment?

  • gary.doyle.520 - 2012-10-11 18:16

Ackermann has shown his worth as a coach but I do not agree with his mindset here. I think it's important to build up momentum going into the semi finals irrespective of wether your place is secured or not.

      gary.doyle.520 - 2012-10-11 19:23

While I understand that it's important to rest key players for semis it was the way he said they would be approaching the game, almost accepting defeat that i did not agree with.

      timothy.vanas - 2012-10-11 19:28

Like Godfrey said at least the game of the Sharks will be on Friday and he will have enough time to change the team if needed.

      sponge.plank - 2012-10-11 21:50

Look at it like this - in 2010 Super 14 bulls were assured top spot on the log going into the last round so they fielded an understrength side against the stormers in their last pool game and lost. Stormers went to Pretoria for the final two weeks later and lost to the bulls. 2010 Currie Cup Sharks were assured top spot on the log going into the last round so they fielded an understrength side against Western Province in the last pool game and lost. Province went to Durban for the final two weeks later and lost to the Sharks. Currie Cup 2011 Lions were assured of top spot on the log going into the last round so they fielded an understrength side against the Sharks in the last pool game and lost. Sharks went to Joburg for the final two weeks later and lost to the Lions. Currie Cup 2012 Lions are assured of second spot and therefore a home semi. They field an understrength side against the Bulls in the last round and will probably lose but then they might possibly play the Bulls in the semi in Joburg the next week and will beat them. Method in his madness?

      jimmy.moustache.12 - 2012-10-12 08:05

Gary, I was both shocked and surprised when I found out you're a comment slut. I thought we had something special and I even had a elaborate scheme where we end up walking on the beach holding hands. I was recently told on news 24 that I am gay by a lad called stirrer. Sure he supports the stormers which puts him in the same class as that fat restarted kid in my kinder-garden class I told you about yesterday, but still he had a valid point. I DO HAVE A SNOR. To prime myself for your proximity, I have printed your photo out and have it sitting on the couch next to me while we watch a DVD together. Occassionally, I throw an M&M at you and pretend you giggle and tell me to stop it. We are watching Nanny Mcphee which always makes me cry. The bit at the end where her wedding dress materialises out of snow is simply beautiful but my favourite scene is where the robots turn on their human masters.

      haasbek.visser - 2012-10-12 08:21

  • spear.tackle.7 - 2012-10-11 18:17

Okay you made the semi's, so you're resting your first choice players because they've played non-stop the whole season, and you're giving some of the boks a go because they had their rest by not playing a lot of testrugby...Clever coaching mr.A !! Bonus for the bulls ...sigh...

      kaptein.spies - 2012-10-11 19:56

@thick spear The mighty Bulls with all their Boks back will destroy any Lions team. So better for them to rest some key players so that they can make WP 12yr cupless the next weekend

  • Generaal1 - 2012-10-11 18:46

Baie wyse besluit, die Bulle het bewys dat dit kan werk, eerstens kry die spelers n broodnodige ruskans, tweedens word beserings voorkom aan sleutelspelers.

@ blou Johnny: lol tenminste post jy 'n related post.

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-12 07:12

Ok vaalseun, kom ek help jou gou reg. Idioot.

  • theunis.botha.96 - 2012-10-12 06:45

Could field an even weaker team agaist the Bulls with say 8-10 changes in the starting lineup.Alternatively the Lions can just give away a lot of penalties and allow Morne to loose the game single handed on behalf of the Bulls.

      spyker.oflanagan - 2012-10-12 06:52

The Bulls will probably not loose the game. They might lose though.
