Liebenberg named WP skipper

2011-07-28 15:47

Cape Town - Hooker Tiaan Liebenberg has been named as Western Province's captain for their Absa Currie Cup clash against the Blue Bulls at Newlands on Saturday.

Liebenberg replaces Deon Fourie, who captained WP in their first two Currie Cup games of the season.

This is the only change to the starting line-up that thrashed the Leopards 47-9 in Potchefstroom on Friday night.

As usual, WP expect a big physical onslaught from their Northern rivals and Liebenberg provides some much needed extra beef to their front row.

Fourie has also struggled to find is lineout jumpers this season and coach Coetzee will hope Liebenberg will bring some much needed improvement in that regard.

"Tiaan is a specialist at set piece and thus this week he is preferred. We will continue to alternate the captaincy between these two players until Duane (Vermeulen) returns," said WP coach Allister Coetzee.

On the bench Nick Groom replaces Louis Schreuder at scrumhalf while Berton Klaasen replaces Isma-eel Dollie.

Groom and Klaasen both performed well for WP's under-21 side against the Leopards on Friday.

"The Bulls are a physical side and you need to match that physicality. It will be direct, in your face stuff this weekend and there is a high premium on physicality. As such we have included Nic Groom on the bench, and brought in Burton Klaasen to cover centre - both are abrasive players that can handle the pressure and deserve the opportunity," said Coetzee.

  • Hanjo - 2011-07-28 16:15

This constant swapping of Deon and Tiaan whenever we face a good scrumming team is beyond ridiculous!

      WPBLIKSEM - 2011-07-28 16:19

@Hanjo- Tiaan(110kg's) is heavier an more PHYSICAL than Deon(100 kg's)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      GHT - 2011-07-28 16:20

Fourie's lack of lineout accuracy has been irritating me for a while. Although Liebenberg isn't exactly a shining star in that area this season either. I do feel that rotating the captaincy like that is a bit ridiculous. Why not Duvenhage? Wasn't there talks pre CC season that Duvenhage and Vermeulen would share the captaincy?

      Hanjo - 2011-07-28 16:48

my point is, if Deon is first choice hooker, why swap them around? it shows a lack of confidence in Deon, and it can't be good for him as a player. Tiaan can weigh 150kgs, the point remains, don't swap them around whenever we are to encounter a tough scrum, do they then feel that Deon isn't good enough at scrum time to start? if so, why does he start every other game? Deon had a great season, he is the form hooker, he deserves to start, simple as that. I agree with GHT, you can't change your captain every second game, if they were aware of the fact that Deon will be benched in "scrumming" games, they shouldn't have given him the captaincy.

      Kaapie - 2011-07-28 17:44

What i cant understand is that Dewald is the vice kappie.. shouldnt he be taking the reins if the kappie isnt there???

      Kleinboet - 2011-07-29 01:55

According to the news Fourie is not 100% fit, although he is on the bench. Apparently he is benched as a precaution and, in any case, Liebenberg must be given a fair opportunity to show his worth. The actual captain is Duvenhage, who is still injured

      The_Fox - 2011-07-29 08:00

Hey Kleinboet, Duvvies is in the run-on side so surely he should be the captain? (seeing that he was named vice-captain at the start of the season)

      Kleinboet - 2011-07-30 00:23

The_Fox, sorry man! I must have been drinking directly from my papsak when I looked at the players' names. Whenever I do that, I tend to miss certain words. Think the papsak gets in the way! I agree, he should have been entrusted with the captaincy under the circumstances

  • BlueRaven - 2011-07-28 16:51

Hope Klaasen gets game time. Like Catrakilis - a class player who should develop to the highest level.

      BiggestBull - 2011-07-28 17:36

      Says who?

  • BiggestBull - 2011-07-28 17:37

Only 2 WP players in this squad are good enough to play for the mighty Bulls!

  • John - 2011-07-28 17:40

I don't think this is the best "B" side we have available in the 1st place. Luke Watson would have been perfect but that of course would have pissed Barney off. Watson could still sit and eat his cornflakes on his own in the morning if Barney does not want him to sit at the same table as the rest. Then there is Schalk Britz, Big Joe Van, Keegan Daniel. Peter Grant should also have been there together with Duvenhage. That's if these pricks wanted to reward S15 form like they say. Straus is another player who can hold his own at centre in any company especially as there was nobody to marshal the backline defence. If they are truly looking for the X factor they might have wanted to consider Sadie. I would have even taken Stef Terblanche who is preferred to Adi at the Sharks. Whoever chose this outfit is smoking his socks if they think this is the best "B" side we can put on the park. Why the *$%# was Muller & Brussouw taken based on a 50/50. Why was Aplon forced to go when he was an obvious choice for the RWC squad. Why are we wrapping Frans Steyn in cotton wool. This was an ideal opportunity for him to find his feet at test level and in southern hemisphere style rugby against the best.

      Kaapie - 2011-07-28 17:46

John I think you are confused mate.. we talking CC here. WP nogal.. it appears that you are talking Bok rugby..tomorrow is Friday.. you shouldnt drink on a Thu!
