Griquas too good for Boland

Wellington - Griquas fullback Gouws Prinsloo has spearheaded a 21-3 win over the Boland Cavaliers in the Currie Cup qualifying round at the Boland stadium in Wellington on Saturday.

Prinsloo, scored a try and kicked two penalties in a tightly contested affair to contribute 11 points to his side's victory.

Griquas are now second on the standings behind the Leopards, who beat the Valke comprehensively on Friday.

Both Boland and Griquas were yellow carded in the first 15 minutes, with lock JC Astle and centre Jonathan Francke both spending time in the sin bin. Griquas however shrugged it off and put the first points on the board in the 24th minute with an unconverted try by Prinsloo.

Prinsloo was again called into action on the stroke of half-time to kick a penalty to ensure an 8-0 lead at the interval.

Boland's only points came in the 47th minute as flyhalf Eric Zana kicked a penalty after the hosts could not break through the tight defence of the visitors. But it was to be the only time that Boland troubled the scorers as Griquas upped their game and went on to score twice to seal the game.

Firstly lock Hilton Lobberts, was rewarded for his hard work with a five pointer, before replacement centre Howard Mnisi scored on the stroke of the final whistle.

An earlier penalty by Prinsloo however helped his side to the victory and means that the two unbeaten sides in the qualifying round will take each other on at GWK Park in Kimberley next weekend.

Scorers:

Griquas 21 (8): Tries: Gouws Prinsloo, Hilton Lobberts, Howard Mnisi; Penalties: Gouws Prinsloo (2)

Boland Cavaliers 3 (0): Penalty: Eric Zana.
