Griquas target the 'Big Five'

Gerdie Karstens

Kimberley – Griquas have the firing power this year to hang the Currie Cup’s “Big Five” – the Sharks, Cheetahs, Lions, Western Province and Blue Bulls - against their trophy wall.

The Free State Cheetahs are in their sights in Bloemfontein this weekend after Griquas managed to beat the Sharks at the weekend.

Last year they beat Free State 28-18 in Bloemfontein and a tough match is anticipated between the neighbours.

With key players such as wing Bjorn Basson, fullback Riaan Viljoen, scrumhalf Sarel Pretorius, fly-half Naas Olivier and flanker Davon Raubenheimer in the Northern Cape side, they proved themselves title contenders in 2009.

They finished fifth on the log and only missed the semi-finals on points difference.

Last year Griquas won eight of their 14 games. Six of the victories were in succession.

This included two good victories over the Lions, as well as one each against Free State and Western Province.

While they could not manage wins over the Blue Bulls and Sharks, Griquas finished the competition with their best winning percentage of 57%.

“We definitely want to up our winning percentage. We have a good squad and enough depth to be able to compete throughout the season,” said Griquas coach Dawie Theron.

It has not always been sunhine and roses for Griquas.

Last year’s winning percentage is significantly better than in 2006 and 2007 when they only won 36% of their 14 Currie Cup games.

That is not to mention 2008 when Griquas could only manage a winning percentage of 23%.

In 2006 they beat the Sharks and Cheetahs, while 2007 only included a win over the Bulls.

They beat WP early in the 2008 competition, but the bigger union avenged the defeat later in the competition.
