Kimberley – Griquas will not be lacking confidence when they travel to Durban for Friday’s Currie Cup match against the Sharks.
While Griquas narrowly lost 38-39 against the Blue Bulls in Pretoria last Friday night, they gave it their all in what is considered their best performance to date this season.
They will draw a lot of confidence from that and be out to give the Sharks a hiding on their home turf.
Griquas have managed to pull themselves together after a big loss against Western Province a few weeks ago. They beat the Pumas and the performance against the Bulls confirmed that they are still title contenders.
If Dawie Theron’s side can keep up the standards of Loftus, a semifinal spot is almost a certainty.
“We’re going to Durban to build on the good rugby we have played to date. We know that the Sharks are a terrific side with eight or nine Springboks in their ranks, so we have no illusions about the challenge ahead,” Theron said on Monday.
Griquas would have won at Loftus had flyhalf and captain Naas Olivier converted wing Bjorn Basson’s third try.
“Naas played his best game for Griquas in spite of the kick that he missed. He kicked very well tactically and showed that he’s a quality player,” said Theron.
Basson produced another quality performance and will have a crucial role to play against the Sharks.
“Bjorn just underlined his value as a wing. Rocco Jansen also performed well when he was sent on,” said Theron.
Griquas’ forwards gave it their all against the Bulls and the Sharks can expect an equally ferocious onslaught.
“The pack did really well. We scrummed well and competed well on the ground,” said Theron.
“We weren’t as effective at the rucks in the second half, but will work on that this week.”
