Griffons end EP's winning run

Johannesburg - The Eastern Province Kings' undefeated run in the Currie Cup came to an end on Friday evening after they conceded a 27-18 loss against the Griffons in this First Division match played in Welkom.

The victory for the Griffons ensured their excellent record over the EP Kings at the North West Stadium continued as the Port Elizabeth side has now conceded six consecutive defeats against the Welkom side in matches played on the road.

Jannie Myburgh kicked three penalties and a conversion while Werner Griesel and Hendrik van der Nest scored tries for the hosts. Tiaan van Wyk also kicked two penalties.

The visitors notched up three five-pointers which were scored by Gerrie Odendaal who added a brace and Jaco van Schalkwyk who also kicked one penalty.

The EP Kings though still ended week eight in first position on the First Division log with 28 points and are six points clear of the Griffons who are in third place.

The Boland Cavaliers secured their second win of the First Division following their 41-21 victory over the Valke in Wellington.

The hosts ran in five tries which were scored by Alex Kock (2), Jeremy Plaatjies, Cornel Hendricks and PJ Vermeulen. Former Springbok flyhalf and Boland Cavaliers assistant coach Louis Koen kicked two penalties and three conversions. Jaquin Jansen also converted two tries.

The Valke scored three five-pointers which were added by Bradley Fortuin (2) and Eddie Gauche. Martin Thomson (2) and Japie Naude added the conversions.

In the other Currie Cup First Division game of the weekend, the second-positioned SWD Eagles continued to maintain the pressure on the EP Kings at the top of log following their 17-7 victory over the Border Bulldogs in East London.

The visitors scored two tries in this game which were added by Shawn Raubenheimer and Bevin Fortuin. Ambrose Barends, who is currently the leading points' scorer in the competition with 67, kicked one penalty and two conversions.

The Border Bulldogs' only try of the match was scored by Yongama Mkaza. Jeffrey Taljard added the conversion.
