Fondse leaves Stormers

Cape Town - The Newcastle Falcons have announced the signing of Stormers and Western Province lock Adriaan Fondse.

According to the club’s website Fondse will shortly join up with the club to bolster their forward pack.

The 28-year old, who joined the Stormers from the Bulls in 2008, will join fellow South Africans Greg Goosen, Ashley Wells and Corne Uys.

Falcons coach Alan Tait said he had signed Fondse for his athletic prowess and for his abilities in the lineout.

“He takes the ball clean from line-outs and in that area he is spot on. We have to get our line-out right so that the backs can operate with quick clean ball.”

“His defence and work-rate around the field is at a really high standard,” the Scot added.

Fondse enjoyed a mixed stint at the Stormers that was hampered by injury and the failure to secure his first team place competing against the likes of Andries Bekker, Rynhardt Elstadt, De Kock Steenkamp and Anton van Zyl.

During Fondse’s time at the Stormers some scribes believed that he had failed to live up to the expectations of the hype generated by his arrival and the earlier promise he had shown at the Bulls.

His reportedly exorbitant salary was seen as surplus to the WP and Stormers wage bill as management failed to negotiate a new contract with him.
