First blood to Cheetahs

2012-10-19 20:49

Bloemfontein - The Free State Cheetahs convincingly smashed the Eastern Province Kings 53-14 in the first of two promotion/relegation games in Bloemfontein on Friday evening.

The Cheetahs romped to a half-time lead of 24-0 and scored eight-tries-to-two to make a Kings' victory in next weekend's clash in Port Elizabeth almost irrelevant.

The huge points difference means the Kings will have to beat the Cheetahs by at least 40 points and four tries in the second match if they are to advance to the Currie Cup Premier division.

The Kings showed some good intent from the kick-off, but their eagerness was met by good defence from the Bloemfontein-based side.

The hosts looked the better of the sides in the opening minutes, their first couple of attacking phases resulting in an unconverted try for wing Nico Scheepers in the fifth minute.

The Kings tried to recover, but they could not free the ball up in the tackle situation and turned over possession to the hosts.

The visitors also struggled in the scrums, with loosehead prop Jaco Engels conceding numerous penalties for scrumming in on the angle.

With the points difference in the back of their minds the Cheetahs wasted no time turning another attacking opportunity into points.

The Cheetahs put together some good phases of play before the overlap saw prop Ross Geldenhuys go over for the hosts' second unconverted five-pointer.

The Cheetahs piled on the pressure in the scrums and also had the Kings' number at the breakdown area.

Some ill-discipline did not help the Kings' cause, and the Cheetahs scored their third try in the 27th minute after eighthman Philip van der Walt rounded off another good attacking spell.

Scheepers converted the try, his first of the evening, to give his side a 17-0 lead.

Defending for most of the half the Kings enjoyed very little possession and their leaking defence again cost them dearly.

Cheetahs' wing Raymond Rhule ran around the Kings' backline and offloaded to centre Andries Strauss for their bonus-point try, with Scheepers converting.

The visitors played with renewed vigour and scored their first try in the 46th minute, with flanker Devin Oosthuizen rounding off the visitors' best piece of attacking play of the evening, with flyhalf George Whitehead converting.

The Cheetahs, however, bounced back as centre Strauss scored his second try of the evening.

The visitors continued their resurgence as centre Shane Gates crossed the whitewash in the 54th minute, with Whitehead converting.

However, the Kings' fight-back was short-lived as the Cheetahs' hooker and captain Adriaan Strauss intercepted and scored a converted try.

Replacement flyhalf Tewis de Bruyn later extended the home side's lead to 25 points as he succeeded with a penalty conversion, while Rayno Benajmin added another five-pointer.

Referee Jonathan Kaplan then wrapped up the match as he awarded a penalty try against the Kings for collapsing an attacking maul on their own goalline.

And this team is going to play Super Rugby? Ridiculous...

      jacobus.vandermerwe.9 - 2012-10-19 21:28

The worst part is that the cheetahs didn't exactly play very well... They can probably break 100 when Brussow, Goosen, Coenie WP Nel, Juan etc. are back.

      kevin.watson.7906 - 2012-10-19 21:34

You are so right, but Cheeky Watson is using "affirmative action" to try and shortcut his way to to the top echelons in rugby. He will destroy players ruin their confidence and his dream will come crashing down around his ears. Professional sport is no place for experiments based on quotas.

      godfrey.welman - 2012-10-19 21:36

Wow, all of a sudden the Cheetahs gets a lot of support from once CATS fans, are they hoping to re-enter S15 that way????

Jirre - but that was a hard game to watch - this stand in a row and pass the ball to the guy next to you for 80 minutes gameplan - just boring to watch - and its even worse if both teams play the same game. Think of it - the higlight of the night was the double pod punch through the backline play of the Cheetas from a 5 meter penalty late in the second half - and they lost the ball in the process . . . . .

  • deon.booysen - 2012-10-19 21:01

  • liveby.thesword.1 - 2012-10-19 21:11

okay first off i am a cheetahs supporter...so i follow their games.....they played dismally! this incorrect placement procedure(cadre deployment/entitlement) should show exactly why things are going pearshaped in this country...... kings get ready to have your @sses handed to you!

  • clive.kihn - 2012-10-19 21:13

Proves that SARU has engineered a lose-lose situation by installing the Kings in Super Rugby.

  • gwvickers - 2012-10-19 21:14

I rest my case, I see records been broken in super rugby next year, mark my words

  • viva.lebok - 2012-10-19 21:18

I love it. useless kings. They're going to be the joke of the Super 15 next year.

  • frikdt - 2012-10-19 21:43

EP Idiots are going to get nailed in the Super 15 and I'm looking forward to every single moment. I only wonder what the Cheetahs and all their supporters would have done if they had been treated the same as the Lions and had to give up their Currie Cup First Division status without any promotion/relegation matches.

  • Boetanev - 2012-10-19 21:48

As usual all the idiots commentating. Actually feel sorry for Alan Solomons and all the other role players trying to uplift a once proud rugby province because according to these idiots EP rugby only consist of Cheeky and Luke.

EP on the rise? Wtf is that? They are the !-section bullies (slightly)... They had 100years of senior rugb y and amounted to nothing.. They found out tonig\r\nht, that bashing the Lions, was a farce... And even though this was not the \real\ Kings, you will still feel the wrath of super rugby, as the cheetahs tonight, are not the real super ruby cheetahs as weLl... 53-14... Get used to thayt scoreline!!!

  • gerald.toit - 2012-10-19 23:42

This promotion/relegation system is flawed and needs to be changed. None of the teams viaing for promotion will ever win against any of the current currie cup teams. Not even if the game is against Griekwas, who are historically the weakest currie cup team will they be able to win for promotion. The only just system, is automatic promotion and automatic relegation. Can't believe that the smaller unions were dumb enough to agree to such a unjust and flawed promotion/relegation system.

      stefan.breedt.5 - 2012-10-20 00:05

as hulle nie promosie kan wen verdien hulle nie on currie beker te speel nie. As hulle nie die swakste span kan wen wat gaan met hulle in die reeks gebeur.

      Kimson Komodo Chan - 2012-10-20 00:42

A comment from a supporter who is sour. No, I feel sorry for the lions. Kings must earn themselves promotion.the kings are clearly out of their depth

      frank.grootboom - 2012-10-20 12:20

You are 100% correct & I fully agree with you.it does'nt make sense at all the smaller unions should reaaly have never agreed to such an unfair system!

  • rickey.tickey - 2012-10-20 00:49

How hyper hilarious: A Vodacom team will play S15 in 2013 .... extremely unlikely that the Kings will beat FS Cheetahs by more than 40 points next weekend.

  • joubert.joep - 2012-10-20 02:59

hehe Cheeky give some money to Puke and run away now - where was the development players? Time to run ou wa! Or your gonna have to select Puke a flyhalf where he can see the game.

  • don.gray.583 - 2012-10-20 03:30

  • nico.eksteen.7 - 2012-10-20 03:37

..but where are the black okes in the EP side? We've been told about the excellent black players in the eastern cape just waiting to be unleashed on the rest of the rugby world. Come on lads. Select your black stars, this is your chance to show the world what you have.

  • roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-10-20 06:05

WOW! am I glad to see this. A pity that the EP Kings cannot reconsider their staying in the Super Rugby because this game with the Cheetas is only a start to bigger and better results against them. Wonder what excuses the Watsons will have?

  • jaymz.hurly - 2012-10-20 07:06

How can we allow a team that CAN'T make curry cup rugby to play super rugby (not so super with the EP kings taking part) if you want to develop rugby in eastern province host a couple games but don't put an undeserving team into the biggest club competition the the world, ANC mentality has now been introduced into rugby earn nothing expect everything...EP kings is the julius malema of rugby

  • frank.grootboom - 2012-10-20 07:12

This was The EP Kings a 1st Division team from PE and not the 2013 Super-15 Southern Kings which will be EP,SWD & Border with new players as well. Promotion/Relegation games should never happen because it is a very unfair system and I agree with Sports/writer Gavin Rich on his story about this on the 16 Oct 2012. The correct system (like in soccer) is that the team ending last in a higher division should just automatically be relegated and the team ending first in the lower division be promoted to the higher division. The simple reason is that there is a huge gap between playing in a higher division and lower division. The Cheetahs play in two divisions higher (Curry Cup & S15) than the Kings and thus having already an unfair advantage over the EP Kings. To explain this to the Freestaters & Lion supporters as well as this irresponsible bias sports writer of this article would be a waste of time but I will rather make an example in the hope that you might get the point. You can't expect the Wallabies, the English or the French national teams to loose against the Sharks,Bulls,Stormers,Lions ect because there is a huge gap between provincial and International rugby. Closer to the Curry Cup competition, the Cheetahs coach said that he did not prefer to play against the Stormers last week because they will have their Springboks back and we all know what happen in that game. Same with the Bulls the results were clear even before the game started as they had their Springboks back.

      Theuns Jacobs - 2012-10-20 07:19

@ frank. so can u imagine how bad the sup15 team is going to be with gatkruip watson dev players that he promised for the EC region. o sorry i forgot, it was just another one of gatkruip watson lies to help his son cause no other union wanted him.

      jaymz.hurly - 2012-10-20 07:33

This is not the EPL take reading for example they were automatically promoted they will loose to man u 2-0 or even 2-1 and beat QPR or wolves 2-1 where as the EP kings will loose week in and week out 60-10(is only a 6 team tournament the best 6 in South Africa not the best 5 plus 1) we not living in a fairy tale world do you really think the SOUTHERN kings 3 division 1 teams put into one will beat the crusaders C team...this is like communism looks great on paper yet not one communist country has ever succeeded. like you mentioned a team petrified of playing a Stormers team demolished the EP kings would you really watch a Stormers EP kings game if you not a stormers supporter take the cheetahs blue bulls match always great crowd turn over as a blue bull supporter would u waste your money going to a game were the outcome will be 60-0 EP kings in curry cup rugby will chase away interest in watching curry cup games crowd turn over overall is already low enough now we will be chasing away tv supporters aswel another thing that separates us from EPL there division 3 teams can pack out a stadium we struggling to do so in top division rugby with the top 6 teams in south africa now imagine with the top 5 1 that's why in south african rugby promotion matches are necessary

      riaan.vanniekerk.5 - 2012-10-20 08:04

@jaymz I would pay to watch the Kings get hammered by more than half a century

      frank.grootboom - 2012-10-20 09:51

I still think that you all don't get it. I can not believe that educated peolple can't understand that this was not the 2013 Super 15 Kings team but a first Division team from one city which is Port Elizabeth. Can you be really so blind, ignorant and having your facts all screwed up??? This is also not about Cheeky and Luke Watson but only about top-flight rugby for the people from the entire Eastern Cape. How can you expect us to field black players in last night game while most of our top black players like,Mvovo,Basson,Kolisi the Ndongwane's,Maku,Jantjies ect are with other S.A franchises plus the host of others like Daniel,Kankowski,Sykes,J Potgieter, ect are also with other S.A franchises! We are at least getting Sykes back home,Dimitri & Strauss, already sign with The 2013 Super-15 Kings. We will develope and keep our black talent from now onwards! Jaymz your assumptions/predictions about 60-10 ect is totally unfounded because we can't predict future games without having all the facts and you clearly don't have all the facts. This strenght vs strenght is not working because any of the Bulls, the Stormers and the Cheetahs could have played in the promo/regulation matches. 7 or 8 teams in the Curry Cup & First Division can work if correctly administered or manage. Yes Riaan I will pay to watch all the Kings Super-15 games at home.

      charlietlo - 2012-10-20 10:38

@frankgerald none of the teams you mentioned made it to the semis(exception being ep), so in my opinion they are still going to get an ass whipping come super 15+1

Point is if unions like the Cheetahs and Lions struggle in the Sxv what will happen with the kings? Yes they will aquire a handfull of seasoned players but in lenghty and demanding competition as super rugby it will hardly help. Even a Union as resourcefull as the Stormers strugled in the end because of players getting injured. Its not unlikely that a key position will have 3 or 4 players injured in that one position or players injured across the board. Even with their team at full strength its unrealistic to think that 10 or how ever many new guys will suddenly raise you from vodacom cup level to super rugby level. Honestly I can't see them winning one next year and I think we are going to see some record scores....

Perhaps I'm confused, but was it not Cheeky Watson's idea to field an "All Black" team - sorry 99% Black, but led by sonny-boy Luke/Puke??? The way I understood it was for the Kings to promote BLACK rugby??? Looking at the starting list, I see only one Black name among the total line-up, no. 19 Mpho Mbiyozo. Help bietjie daar, asseblief???

  • hamish.drake1 - 2012-10-20 09:19

I actually feel sorry for the Kings players(except Cheeky's spawn). They have been given a hospital pass by the ANC, the Watsons and SARU. This is the kind of situation where players lose confidence and end up on the scrap-heap at 25yo. The Cheetahs weren't at their best and they are not even the best SA S15 team, so next year there going to be carnage in the Eastern Cape. Sad.

  • clive.kihn - 2012-10-20 09:28

I get no pleasure at seeing the EP guys being hammered like this - a foretaste of what they can expect next year, and worse. SARU have really screwed up here. This will do absolutely nothing for rugby in the region. Because the Kings have been "guaranteed" a place in Super Rugby for only one season, many of their signings for 2013 are on a one-season loan basis and will leave when the Kings are no longer in Super. Bringing in outside players is a kick in the teeth for local players, not a boost for development. The only answer is to do it properly: increase the Currie Cup to seven teams, include the Kings (much as happened with Natal when they were struggling), and let them compete for inclusion in Super Rugby like any other team. Promotion will not happen in one year, but if they make it, it will be entirely on merit, and not because certain ANC officials want it.

Now, I'm confused. Are the Kings going to develop players of colour for the South Sea Islands or South Africa? The only player of colour in their starting XV was a Samoan! Can Cheeky please explain this to us? Isn't the main reason for their fast-tracking into Super Rugby so that (South African) players of colour can get more exposure?

I think you are very confused just like the many others as you so correctly stated. My earlier comment is that our black talent and Springboks like Kolisi (soon to be Springbok),Basson,Ndongwane's,Jantjies,Maku ect is already been pouch by other franchises. We will be able to hold onto our black talent from now onwards! Its takes months and years to develope players so not to worry our developement players will come through in good-time.

@Frank. Maybe Stefan is confused, but you are idiotic stupid. Don't talk about things you know nothing about. Go to politicians and talk your garbage there. Twit!

Yes Mr Spillies your name calling to people you don't know is totally rude & un-call for, I will not lower my standards to your level to say what I really think about people like you. You are clearly not worth it. It also shows that your apartheid racist upbringing has made you the sick, twisted, bitter person you are to talk like that to somebody of colour that you don't know and I did not even comment/reply to any of your comments. I did not engaged in any name calling on my reply to Stefan or tried to degrade him in a public about his views because everybody has a right to his own opinion.
