Cheetahs hold breath over PW

Brenden Nel - SuperSport

Johannesburg - The Toyota Free State Cheetahs are sweating over the availability of hooker PW van Vuuren ahead of this weekend's Absa Currie Cup match against the Sharks in Durban.

Van Vuuren limped off the field on Saturday during his side's 33-30 loss to the Vodacom Blue Bulls and afterwards coach Naka Drotské expressed his concern over the hooker's fitness, especially with such a crunch game ahead of them this weekend.

Van Vuuren was diagnosed on Monday with a hamstring strain on his right leg, and the medical team decided they would wait longer before making a decision on his availability ahead of this coming weekend's action.

But in some good news for the Cheetahs, winger Rayno Benjamin seems to have recovered from his hamstring strain on his left leg and according to the Cheetahs medical team is "expected to be available for the weekend".

There was also some good news on four other injured stars, who should all be returning to action in the next month or so.

Midfielder Robert Ebersohn, who signed an extention to his contract last week, was recovering well from his injury and is expected to be back in action next week while Springbok winger Jongi Nokwe is in the final phase of his rehab programme, and is expected to return to play in mid August.

Two other stars - Phillip van der Walt and Wilhelm Steenkamp are expected only to be back in action at the end of August.
