Johannesburg - The SWD Eagles secured a place in next month's Absa Currie Cup promotion/relegation playoffs with a 57-35 victory over the Falcons at Outeniqua Park on Friday.
The Eagles side, along with the Eastern Province Kings who top the first division log, will fight for promotion to next season's premier division in October.
The hosts confirmed their status as the second leading team on the log after they achieved maximum points from their clash against the bottom of the log Falcons in George.
The Eagles (35) are now only two points behind the EP Kings (37), and the two outfits will go head-to-head in their final league match to determine which team will end the season in first place.
Baldwin McBean ran in a hat-trick of tries and Wensley Scott scored a brace, while Shawn Raubenheimer, Bobby Joubert, Joe Breytenbach and Jaco Terblanche all scored tries as well. Ambrose Barends kicked four conversions and Jandre Blom added a further two.
Barends (103) is currently the leading points scorer in the first division. He is closely followed by the Boland Cavaliers' Jacquin Jansen who has 94 points in second place.
The Falcons achieved a consolation bonus point for scoring five tries, which were secured by Chrysander Botha (two), Coert Cronje, Anthony Klonaridis and Kyle Hendricks. Martin Thomsen kicked four conversions, and the fifth was added by Japie Naude.
The Cavaliers booked their place in next month's first division semifinals following their comprehensive 54-13 victory over the Border Bulldogs at the Buffalo City Stadium on Friday.
Former Western Province scrumhalf Bolla Conradie scored a brace for the Cavaliers while Braam Immelman, Franzel September, Jeremy Plaatjies, Cornal Hendricks and Eusebio Guinazu were the other try-scorers for the visitors. Jansen kicked five conversions and three penalties.
Nomani Tonga was the only try scorer for the Bulldogs. His five-pointer was converted by Logan Basson, and Jeffrey Taljard kicked two penalties for the hosts.
